Hurray! Another Brit abroad in these hallowed halls.
The portals look like big mirrors, with one or two steps leading up to them. They are marked on the map, and when you put a cursor over one the two arrows icon appears indicating that something is possible to manipulate. Hope this helps. |

Just to thank you all for your generous help. As I suspected, it was easy in the end as I found the portal to the east. I still don't know why my message had a message on it saying there was a locked portal up north but hey, who cares!
