I have seen LOTR twice now, (Went again tonite), and I have read the books twice too.

Tonight, the following things I wanted to query about the film:

i)Why is the password to the entrance of Moria in Elven, when it was a Dwarven stronghold...I know it used to be a trade passage (from what I remember from the book, but the film alters conceptions and opinions!!)...was it something to do with the elves had one side and the dwarves another? Or was it because the dwarves and elves used to be friends?

ii)When Galadrial walks down the steps, how come her feet make sounds?? Surely, the book tells us elves cannot be heard, no matter how hard we listen?

iii)Why does Gandalf risk the Balrog, when he knows beforehand it is there?does he fear the watched road more?

iv) In the film, they skipped things that CAN be missed out, but IMPO, they have missed things out that they will find hard to explain in the second film.
EG - the cloaks and the broaches...they are so important in the second film, how are they going to explain how they were acquired? surely it wud have been easier to show the elves giving them the gifts..

Ok, some of these points are maybe out, but I just got home from the film a second time, and it takes over from the book, so im struggling to remember the book, as the film overwrites it...

i) The West Door of Moria was constructed for the Elves of Eregion in the Second Age. In this time, there used to be a lot of trading between the Dwarfs of Moria and the Elves, that used to live in the now vacant lands between Rivendell and the Misty Mountains. And because the dwarven language is supposed to be kept secret by the dwarves, maybe that is the reason, why the entrance is opened by an elvisch word.
BTW, in Eregion Sauron showed the Elves how to create the rings of power. And Galadriel also stood there before going to Lorien after the destruction of the Elven Kingdom by Sauron.

ii) hm, don't know

iii) The only reason I ca imagine, is that he feared, that Saruman would show up personally to get the ring. But anyway, Saruman knows which route the guys would have to travel, there aren't too many...

iv) and with this they left out the very nice scene when Gimli asks for a piece of Galadriels hair...

For your third point, it's actually Aragorn who doesn't want to risk the mines of Moria in the book and Gandalf who insists that they enter the mines.

Well, going through the Mines was a last resort. They tried going through the mountain pass of Caradhas (sp?) but were blocked by the snow storm.
Going south around the Misty Mountains through the Gap of Rohan would take too long and furthermore, would bring them too close to Isengard, and hence Saruman.
So all in the decision to go through the Mines of Moria was the best of a series of bad decisions.

As to why the password was elvish - because the gate was made by elves?

If you think I am a nitpicker, wait until you meet Donut!!

And I am not nitpicking, I thought the film was good, hence why I have seen it twice. But, they have missed somethings out, and it could have been made better.

Me and my brother had a discussion, where by I said they could have made 6 films (one for each part of the book), this way, the book could be translated across to the film perfectly, missing nothing out.

i)I thought it was because of the trade pass..

I wasn't calling the film, I was just questioning how it has been translated from word to image...there were a few things that sprung to mind while watching it...and as for the nitpicking thing, although they have made a stunning film. it will never be as good as the book, and maybe it should have stayed as it was: a book.

Heh. Galadriel is barefoot.

As for Gandalf vis-a-vis Moria, Note that there are two ways he could have gone. One passed by Isengard, and was therefore probably guarded by Saruman and his entire army of goblins. The other went through Moria, and at least the Balrog didn't know they were coming. The Fellowship alerting the Balrog was very much a worst-case scenario.

Most of the questions have already been answered.

However they had to make the film this way so non-fans would go see it. That said let me also say that I have heard the Directors Cut DVD
will be somewhere around 4hrs and 45 minutes long. I have seen scenes,
that were not in the movie shown in the theaters, on tv. During a broadcast on the History Channel they did a Bio of J.R.R. Tolkien. The books featured heavily in the Bio and they showed scenes that were not seen in the theaters. One showed Legolas running his hands over the Bow of Galadriel after she gave it to him. Another showed them loading up the elven boats and elves brining them wrapped bundles (lembas and the cloaks perhaps). So do not dispair. They may have alot more in the DVD release. Personally I would have sat through a 10 hour movie, if they gave us potty breaks.
