Baldur's Gate 2... nothing comes close, great story, wonderful character developement, epic battles... and it's Forgotten Realms... what more could you ask?

I still havn't played NWN so I can't say if it's better...

I agree BG2 is great, but I give my vote to the origanal BG. And, I could ask for more, make it set in Krynn.

I'm with Jorath. BGII all the way with Planescape: Torment second, though. BG is all right, and so is NWN.

I'm giving my vote to BG2 on a technicality. It's clocked up more hours of my free time than any other game (rpg or not) that i've ever played. Great story and character development but, most of all, exceptional combat and magic mechanics. It's like a game of chess every time you get into a scrap! Basing a rpg on a tried and tested (and revised and improved) rule set is a guaranteed winner.

A close second, in terms of merit, not hours (yet!), goes to Morrowind. No other game gives you the sense of freedom to explore and develop your character the way you want to. It puts the role playing into rpgs. Unfortunately though, Morrowind falls short of BG2 in the combat department. Aah! But it's not all about combat!

Personally I prefered the early MM series (up through 6)or Wizardary, the lot. And the grandfather of them all Zork.

For console RPG's Final Fantasy 7 is the best but I agree overall BG2 is the best RPG ever!

Once I would have had to say Planescape with BG2 a close second, but with these new mods for BG2 I think it may have taken the lead.

I would say Planescape Torment and BG2 a close tie. I however think when I am done with Morrowind it might knock them off my list to 2nd
