I loved splitting wood -- great exercise. Living in the country with only a wood-burning stove for a heat source -- now *that* was less fun.

Mind out of the gutter, johnny

I hear that, Timber! isolation is *ALWAYS* a lousy position to be in...unless people are pissing you off!

As TL said... splitting a cord or two is fun... splitting 30 cord a year... year after year... that's not so fun.

When I was a teen I made a few bucks selling firewood... but it was just too much darn work, I ended up getting a job and McDonalds and made a lot more for a whole lot less effort.

These days my brothers and I still split all the firewood for our folks (I've got gas fireplaces in my house for entertaining... no wood required ), but we use a hydraulic splitter and can saw and split an entire winters worth of wood in a day (used to take us most of the summer).

My wood splitting career began and ended with one swing. The head fell off, flying into the woods (fortunately). I left the damn tree laying across the driveway until I could get my hands on a chainsaw.
