Thanks for the plug, Harley. Exit pollsters are even now going through their data but are waiting until the poll closes to predict a winner; but one got plowed and prdicted a win for the "Pro-Sig" Faction.

I fail to see why people keep thinking I said anything about changing their sig size or shape in any way. Some people even missing the wrong end of the stick and picking up a different stick all together Dumbasses thinking I said anything about getting rid of sigs

The sigs are the best part of most forum software. They make it easier to identify when a certain member has posted, or to find one of their posts on a long thread. There are already sig limits in place to stop numbskulls uploading 1Mb sig pics, so what's the problem?

I'm on a 56k dial-up, and i actually find that the sig pics take *less* time to load than the thread in general. This is because the limits on sig size (both in terms of dimensions and file size) are entirely reasonable. Lots of people (me included) also run our sigs through a compression process that cuts down the filesize even more. I've *never* found the load time of sigs to be a problem.

Finally, they bring a bit of individuality to a thread and a member. When you start doing away with sigs (or compromising their use by limiting the type of post they can appear on, or the number of times per thread), then everyone becomes part of the brown and light-brown continuum on a page of more or less ocntinuous text.

Keep the sigs on constantly, folks! They retain your individuality, act as place markers, and also as handy boundaries between posts that scroll too quickly into each other when you're a bit overly aggressive with the scroll wheel

That's my opinion, anyway. Why bother having a forum with sigs enabled and restrained in size for convenience, if you're then going to *further* restrain their use based on some kind of post-by-post content adequacy test?

EDIT : Oh, and i'm not sure about the forum software either, but I *think* that the sig pics actually don't take up *any* space on Ziroc's server. That's why they have to be hosted elsewhere - the only space they take up on the server is the text of the tags that link to them (and that is minimal). That's how it works at my place, anyway. It may not be the case here, though.

I must say that I am in the pro-sig camp. I am on a sucky dial-up modem and I see no difference in the load time. I think they are the one way we can express our individuality, personality and creativity. I love the sigs! I like how I can easily spot someone's post. (Because I don't ALWAYS read every word of a thread and well, to be perfectly honest, I know some people always have worthwhile things to say and other people never do.) I think Bardan is right that the sigs don't take up extra space unless Z is hosting the sig (does he even still do that?). But I think most people have their sigs hossted elsewhere. In fact, that is a requirement at our forum and most of the ones I know about, just not sure about here. I don't want to be inconsiderate, but I am just not convinced that the sigs and slowing down anyone's load time appreciably. TEXT I have found is what slows things down, but even then, I can see no difference.

Sigs slow down is singificant, but its a one time thing. Unless you clear the cache regularly or often post from different computers, you only download a sig pic when it first appears.

But saying that, Im still in the pro-sig camp, but only for posts with some substance to them. If its a bump post or something like that, the sig is just wasted space. Also subsequent postings by the same person - no sense in having 2 or 3 of the same sig in a row.
