Edwin is an exceptional mage. He's a member of the Thayvian Red Wizard sect and automatically gets two extra spells in each circle.
I'm not clear on the other question. Are you asking why Aerie has a spell she won't ever be able to use memorised? Probably a programmer oversight, or something to make you think 'goodie'. At any rate, the maximum EP Aerie will recieve as a mage is 1,475,000, which I don't think quite gets her to level fifteen, the requirement for level seven mage spells.

Hello !

In many of the threads discussing the usefulness of the individual NPCs I have read comments claiming that multiclassed(and some say even dualclassed) spellcasters could only get up to level 6 spells, because there was an according AD&D rule. Well, in my game Aerie just reached cleric level 14 and got her first level 7 priest spell slot as did Jaheira
shortly thereafter (yes I have removed the expcap). Also, when I picked up Aerie she already got at least one level 7 mage spell in her spellbook, which I found quite strange since she will never be able to use those as long as you stay under the cap, regardless if
this maximum-level-6-if-multiclassed-rule exists or not. If it does exist, they seemingly chose not to implement it in BG2, as well as they obviously ignored the maximum
wisdom requirements for priests to get 6 and 7 level spells.

Does anyone know more about this ? Could it have anything to do with the difficulty level you play at ? I am playing at the medium level(I think it is called "core rules").

By the way: does anyone know why Edwin does get the double (up to the maximum of 9) amount of spell slots per level ? I always thought specialist mages got only one extra slot per level ! If Edwin is the "standard"
for specialist mages, though, I would have to seriously reconsider my disregard for them.

Eagerly waiting for the extent of your knowledge and insight to simply overwhelm me,

Ramon

Hi Armisael,

thank you for that interesting bit of info on Edwin. Where did you get it from, though ? When I picked up your favourite mage for a short time, just to "check him out", I read the "kit"- and "biography"-info, but could not find any explanation for his special ability there. I also consulted the manual which did not help, either ( I had to buy the German edition, since they wanted to charge me sixty bucks just for the shipment, if I had ordered the American edition. After installing the first patch all the in-game written information is in English now - audio still is in German, which makes for an interesting combo every now and then - but I am, of course, still stuck with the German manual. It seems, they really were in a hurry
doing the translation and it shows: they just copied most of spell descriptions and tables from the first game, missing most of the changes. As a result, I am always left wondering which vital piece of information I am just not getting.)

Anyway, I still think that Edwin has got even
more than two extra slots per spell level: when I picked him up he got someting like 9 slots per level through level 4 ! An ordinary
mage gets never more than 5, a specialist 6 and Edwin 7 or 8, if you were correct.

As to the first part of my original post: I was just wondering why they did not implememt
the rules neither with regard to minimum wisdom required to get 6 and 7 level priest spells - neither Aerie nor Jaheira should get
higher than level 5 spells due to their low wisdom scores - nor with regard to the maximum spell level accessible to multiclassed characters if the latter rule exists at all. Also, Aerie does not get level
7 mage spells under the cap, but she gets to priest level 14 where she is granted a level 7 priest spell. Come to think of it, I am just realizing that my assumption that there is a rule limiting multiclassed spellcasters to spell level 6, might, after all, just be a misinterpretation on my part of comments on this board that really meant to say that the multiclassed NPCs are limited to spell level 6 in THIS GAME because of the experience cap(which is only almost true, see above).

Oops, if this is the case, I am sorry about the fuss, I just took me a tiny, little, short while to figure that one out... (blushes deeply).

I should have registered as "anonymous" after
all... and chosen a thief or ranger, that stealth ability would come in handy now ...

Hiding in shadows failed
