Can you play ps2 games on ps3?

Yeah, I'm quite positive its got backwards compatibility. Though it won't make the graphics of a ps2 game any better

Ya, I assumed that. Thanks. I am thinking of buying one, but dont want to replace all my ps2 games.

Though I'll wait for some good rpgs to come out first ( FF13) before buying a ps3.

just a note not all ps2 games work with ps3. there is a list somewhere in the net where which ps2 games are compatible with ps3 or not.

It depends on which PS3 you get!

You're one of the lucky people in the US who had the oppurtunity to get one of the original and good PS3's, the US PS3's have a chip which completely emulates the PS2 engine so *ALL* games should work, unless you buy the cheaper 40gig model which cannot play PS2/PS1 games.
Here in Australia (and the in Europe I believe) Sony decided to be cheap and remove the chip and instead use software emulation to play older generation games, which literally cut the range of available titles in half, probably less as most of the ones that work have bugs/glitches

So just make sure you buy the more expensive one and you will be fine! (Unless the new US model's don't have the chip either? i'm not sure sorry)

The 40 gb model has no backwards compatibility, the 80 gb model has some backward compatibility (with software emulation). The older model 60, and 20 gb models had full backwards compatibility (but are no longer being manufactured).

Buy an 80 gig model and if it doesn't work with all your games I'll trade you straight up for my 20 gig model. I'll even throw in Linux preinstalled for free.

Mine has worked with all the PS2 games I've tried... but I've heard there are a few that give it problems.
