Came across this on the History Channel website the other day:
After the American Revolution, English customs fell out of favor, including Christmas. In fact, Congress was in session on December 25, 1789, the first Christmas under America's new constitution. Christmas wasn't declared a federal holiday until June 26, 1870.

And from 1659 to 1681, the celebration of Christmas was actually outlawed in Boston. Anyone exhibiting the Christmas spirit was fined five shillings. History is fun

And aren't we lucky they re-instituted the tradition! Now, come Christmas-time, I can waste a sh*tload of my time out looking for you and everyone else on my list a gift. I spend $50 on you, you spend $50 on me. We both get a crappy gift, and $100 is wasted on useless sh*t. Ain't giving fun?

At least it might help a crappy economy. 'Course that's all undercut by the retail industries absolute reliance on the month of December - which is when almost ALL retail stores make 90-100% of their profit for the year (up through November being spent breaking even).
