Question on video recording software options
Greetz, all
My son has asked to buy Fraps, a video capture software package I've never heard of. At $37, it feels pricy... especially for something I've never heard of. So I'm looking for some input...
Thanks....

Re: Question on video recording software options
Get the free version of Fraps. It is mainly used to record in-game footage of games that have no ability to record gameplay. It is also used to measure FPS in games that have no option or command to do so. IIRC the paid version lets you record as long as you want whereis the free version has a limit (like 30 seconds). As a workaround, I just used to record multiple videos using a hotkey, and splice them together. $37 is ridonkulas for that program - I assumed it was like $5 for paid. If he needs it for something else there is most likely a free program that can do it.

Re: Question on video recording software options
It's real popular with people that play games and do speed runs.. OR tutorials on programs... the unregistered version is free I believe still, but it inserts a bold face type "UNREGISTERED Version" logo at the top right (I think its top right)... and limited to 30 seconds, as Spirit Warrior stated.
It's a very popular program though..

Re: Question on video recording software options
Yeah, there are free, now open-source programs that do what Fraps do, without inserting a watermark on the footage and with no time limitations. I know not the names but I have come by them in my travels. Some searches should reveal them for you. I also seem to vaguely recall Win 7 having this function natively but not entirely sure - might even be built into windows movie maker.
Aswell, many newer games now have a "record" function which eliminates the need for third party progs.

Well, he's made up his mind and in spite of all evidence and logic to the contrary, he's spent 37 of his hard-earned dollars to get Fraps.

Re: Question on video recording software options
What's he want it for so badly? Recording gameplay or something else?

Recording gameplay. He's big into Minecraft and likes recording videos he posts on Youtube. I don't quite see the attraction of 30 minutes of someone wandering around a minecraft world doing things, but apparently, I'm not part of the target market

Re: Question on video recording software options
Yeah Minecraft is pretty popular - no blockies for me either though. Pity he didn't wait and dig around for alternative free progs that do the same.
