LOL I thought of this thread when listening to the news last night and some completely obnoxious Applebee's commercial for "Riblets"

It played every three minutes followed by another that I forget, even though it was the same two commercials.

I think I have been left permanently damaged by the Riblets ditty sung to the tune of "Rawhide"

I couldn't tune it out lol, I was trying to fall asleep (at 6 p.m. & a long day at school lol) I am sensitive to noise when trying to crash.

I did ask Rex to turn it down but not until I had heard it at least three times at a volume it just shouldn't be heard at LOL
AAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! I know the one you mean Moni, and I HATE IT!!!!!! And I swear, if I have to listen to N'Sync caterwaul about Chili's Baby friggin Back ribs one more time, I'm going to do something drastic!

Mark...Right on about the drug adverts. I am so sick of the 'Little Purple Pill' ads, or Nexium, or Prevacid, of Procrid, or Prylosec, or..or..or...AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!! *BRAIN MELTING*!!!!!!!

*Wanders off to TV free zone and tries desperately to re-align his brain with a good book*

Actually it is a series of political ads. People in New York and maybe Vermont have seen them. They are ads for Tom Golisano for Governer. They are played a lot and he seems like a pretty aggravating candidate.

How do you New Yorkers feel about him and his campaign?

(Uh, what party is he representing?)

Mark
I just moved to NY, and noticed the massive inundation by this Golisano twit. I've gotten to the point of grimacing in pain when I see a new one. Personally, I hate political ads, but, what can you do? Everyone's entitled to spout their opinion, even if it does annoy people. I mean...even *I* get to ramble on, and I KNOW that I irritate people.

Good topic Mark.

PS: I have no idea what party he is running on. Although, from the flavor of his ads, I'd guess he's an Independant.

You have to admit that "can you hear me now?" and "dude, you're gettin' a Dell" are quickly becoming cutural fad icons, much like "where's the beef?" and "I've fallen, and I can't get up" were in years past.

You realize, of course, that commercials are supposed to be annoying, because it makes you pay attention more. Think of the commercial you hate the most. Now name the product. That commercial was a success.

Is it "successful" if the customer is so annoyed that they remember the product for years and refuse to purchase it? Brand recognition does not necessarily lead to purchasing behavior. Take it from a consumer behaviorist...irritating advertising tactics do not work over the long run and can actually be far reaching in their damages to company image.

I agree that the "Dude, you're gettin' a Dell" ad is definitely becoming a cultural icon. It will be part of the 2000's time capsule, like "Where's the Beef" and "Spuds McKenzie" was for the 1980's, and the "Yo Quiero Taco Bell" chihuahua was for the 90's. Like all pop cultural icons, it will eventually fade away as well.

Watching TV was a habit I gave up years ago. Somewhere between "American Gladiators", "Full House", and "Married with Children", I decided that TV had degenerated past the lowest common denominator of trash and turned it off. I watch maybe 1 hour of TV for every two weeks; predominantly "Weather Channel" and the "News" (most of which I get from the Internet anyway). I haven't missed it. So most of the ads you are mentioning I've never seen nor heard of.

I believe that annoyance is successful, because you remember the product. Not only that, people who remember a product's annoying commercial will talk about the commercial that annoys them--free advertising.

I agree that it may not make much sense, but most advertising doesn't make any sense anyway.

I think that commercial is hilarious. If you notice, we never see the guy from the waist down, so I have this image in my head that he's walking around all day with a huge tent in his pants. Every time I see the ad I think I'm watching a SNL commercial and keep waiting for the punchline.

And all the stupid drug commercials lately. Just about every pill has side effects like diarrhea or abdominal pain. Can't they get the medicine right with out causing other problems. I think the drugs would be cheaper too, if they'd quit advertising so much.

Sorry...Rant Off!

Mark
Kind of reminds me of pop ads on the web. Glad that stupid X10 cam is gone. I was getting really tired of seeing that one.
