As she enters the drawing room, she notices her unusual guest. Tall, slim and just as charismatic as Ursula… ~ "Archmage Fantine!" ~ She drops a deep curtsey and gestures towards a chair ~ "Please… sit yourself down. Would you like some tea?"

Fantine shakes her head impatiently ~ "No need for that, Mistral. I've come here not so much for a social visit, but to warn you against Ursula's advice." ~ Not waiting for Mistral to recover from her shock at this strange declaration, she continues ~ "You do not know the past of your seniors, Mistral. And you have always looked up to Ursula as the motherly figure in your life. But while she has meant well all these years, she is clearly distorting your view of certain issues in life… issues such as love and friendship."

Mistral finally speaks up, her face drained of colour ~ "What you have said is a very strong accusation, Archmage. I am not sure if you are being fair to the Matron Mother…" ~ "I see you've been brainwashed already, Mistral…" ~ Fantine sighs resignedly ~ "Take this. It's a letter which your mother sent to me shortly before her death. She was my good friend, you know…" ~ Fantine's voice nearly breaks, but she regains control of it ~ "Read it and judge for yourself if I have hurled false accusations against anyone." ~

Hurriedly, Mistral accepts the parchment and unrolls it, devouring the contents on it greedily…

OOC: For anybody who wonders what I'm doing here at this time - AARGH! Why do humans have to have wisdom teeth? *ouch*

Kaz fell and fell, world spinning. The forest disappeared, and there was only blackness. Then she suddenly hit a hard surface. Kaz got up, staring. She seemed to have dropped into a room. Looking above her, she saw the ceiling. Strange. How did I get here? She got up and surveyed the room she had landed in. It seemed the living room of a simple elven family, furnished plainly but elegantly. The walls had several paintings hung on them, most in abstract blues and silvers. A stand held armor and a longsword, both battered from much use. A man was sitting in a chair, weary. Her father. "It's no use, Elsara. We will be overrun soon." Her mother was standing near him. This time she was not smiling, but looked worried. "Are you sure? The last time Faerin wrote, he said the forces would be pushed back soon." "Faerin is a fool," her father spat. "Every time he writes that they will retreat soon, and every time he is wrong. I do not know how long it will be before they break through the barricade. Days, maybe hours. It will only be - " Kaz's father looked at her. "What are you doing here?" he asked sharply.

(ooc: Poor Kaz; I know the feeling cos I've had mine removed before - two each time Do take care, ok?)

~ Eilonwy's Letter ~

My dear Fantine,

I am sure you have heard of Meldrin's continual harassment of my beloved Aragorn. My greatest fear is that I will not be able to stay by his side much longer. I grow weaker by the day and this puzzles me increasingly. Perhaps my maid has been brewing too strong a herbal concoction for me; I shall have to speak to her soon about this. I hope that my child will be a girl; do you not think Mistral a delightful name? I can picture her dancing around merrily like a little whirlwind, but never as uncontrolled as a hurricane.

I have always thanked Mystra for blessing me with the friendship of Ursula and yourself; your friendship is especially precious for the fact that we love the same man. While I have tried voicing my premonitions of impending death to Aragorn, he stubbornly refuses to listen to the contingencies I have planned. Fantine, I depend on you to carry out my wishes if I am no longer around; I demand it of you unreasonably, as I have never demanded anything of you before...

My child must be trained in swordfighting and spellcasting, and given the right to choose his or her ultimate path when the time comes. You see, Fantine, I want a little of Aragorn and myself in our child; and I know I can trust you and Ursula to impart your skills to him or her.

I sense Ursula's unhappiness at my worsening condition. It is plain to me that her love for Aragorn is still strong; so strong that if I should die and Aragorn sink into despair, she will be the greatest sufferer. My suspicion is that she will not want my child to experience love or any other tender feeling, so that my child will be protected from all hurt. Yet I cannot bear this thought, for what is a life without emotion? Once again, I beg you to rescue my child from such a fate, if that fate should come…

You must forgive the ramblings of a desperate woman, but you must take my words seriously. Even now I feel my energy draining away, and I must stop here.

Mystra be with you always, my friend. E.

OOC: Mistral, I had only one of mine removed although two were planned, because when they were halfway done THE PAINKILLER STARTED WEARING OFF! They couldn't stop (tooth was already split into about 5 pieces) and couldn't give me more painkiller, so they had to continue. It was NOT a pleasant sensation!

(ooc: OH NO!!! What kind of a dentist is that?! You should demand a refund at the very least I suppose you were given antibiotics and painkillers to take? As I said, do take care and really sorry to hear about that...)

OOC: Not their fault, my family is very resistant to painkillers - they almost never work right. They had no choice as painkillers do have an effect on your circulatory system and mine isn't that great anyway...

OOC: painkillers have almost completely worn off now, this hurts... and I still need to go through it 3 more times!
Kaz gulped, stammering "Well, I-" but her father did not hear. "This is not your business," he said more softly, "go back to bed." Kaz looked around, staring, and saw a small girl standing behind her. She seemed to have listened to the whole conversation. The girl had black hair and dark green eyes. The delicate features and the high cheekbones made it plain that this was Kaz. None of the three seemed to see the stranger standing in the middle of their room. "We will-" Her father was interrupted by a door slamming open. Several Drow strode into the room. Their leader, smirking, said, "Ah, I see I have found the famous Kalrys." Kaz's father stood up, looking resigned. "I see. Elsara, Kaz, leave. I'll handle this." He reached for his sword on the rack, apparently determined to go down fighting. "But no," the leader said, "do stay." He took something out of his robes - an ebony artifact, shaped like a mask of a screaming man. The holes for the eyes were completely black, although you should have been able to see the room through them. Magic power radiated off it. "Leave!" her father shouted. Elsara ran towards the young Kaz, obviously intending to scoop her up and run away. But it was too late...

Her hands tremble as she finishes perusing her mother's final letter, and she turns to face Fantine ~ "Why wasn't I told about all this before?" ~ Her voice comes out in a whisper as her accusing eyes penetrate Fantine's steady gaze ~ "You were never meant to know about the past, Mistral. Your father never wished to acknowledge you and forbade us to speak about your past… until about a year ago, when he finally came to his senses… by then, you had left both Ursula and myself. We lost contact with you." ~ Seeing the doubt on her former pupil's face, she continues ~ "We last heard of your exploits in Athkatla, but by then you had moved on - you were always just one step ahead of us - so completely the whirlwind your mother pictured you to be."

"What my mother said about the Matron Mother… is it really true?" ~ "Do you doubt your mother's own words, Mistral? Your mother, who died giving birth to you?" ~ Tears course down her cheeks as she hears the stern rebuff. Yet…~ "…it is so difficult to accept all this…" ~ She sobs, returning the letter to Fantine ~ "You never spoke to me about emotions, either. You're just as guilty as the Matron Mother…" ~ Gentle arms embrace her and she clings on to Fantine, seeking comfort ~ "I encouraged you to make friends before you left, Mistral. I introduced you to Jan, don't you remember? I hoped that you would discover for yourself the true value of friendship and love."

Mistral suddenly stiffens ~ "What is love and how shall I recognise it?" ~ "You're no longer a child, Mistral. You cannot expect to be taught everything in life… sometimes, you must learn to find out for yourself. After all, haven't you been following others' advice all these twenty-three years?" ~

Mistral sighs, realising that she will never get an answer to her burning questions. Turning to Fantine, she bows her head in shame ~ "I am sorry for being disrespectful to you, Archmage." ~

"It's alright, Mistral. You've been through a fair bit since your tender years, and this latest news is yet another blow to you…I must go now. I've dwelled too long already. My only wish is for you to focus on the future. What has happened, is now a part of the past. You have the power to mould your future and find your happiness in it. Mystra bless you always, Mistral… farewell…" ~ With that, Fantine teleports out of the castle. ~

Larry continued on, listening to the constant flap of the Hawk's wings through the darkness. He was thinking to himself that this was a very special bird indeed to have known this secret route, get here in this blackness, and now escorting him home. By not paying attention, he almost missed the change of the direction the bird had taken. Giving a second to listen, he again picked up the trail and continued on. Suddenly, there was a small, quiet sheak as the bird had encountered trouble. Larry brought Nightblade to the front, and was ready for whatever his escort had found.

He neither saw, nor heard anything else...but knew to trust in his winged friend. He could feel her hovering close by, but was no longer making any noise. Larry listened hard, and still nothing came to meet him. He began to walk wih the greatest of care...paying attention to his breathing so as not to be too loud on that, either. The glow of Nightblade began to show shadowed forms ahead, on the ground. He crept nearer until he saw something more solid. It was very large, and just as dark as the night...
Continuing to look around, he saw nothing, and could not identify what he was gazing at. Then, Nightbade began to glow stonger. Larry remembered that she did that when she felt strong magic around. Her light became brighter, until most of the cavern had been filled with faint blue light. Larry looked on to the cause of the hawk's distress. As he gazed up, and up...his heart became more and more fearful. Finally ending at the gigantic head Larry realized that he was staring at a Black Dragon. He did not know what to do. Apparently, it was still asleep. Larry looked for the hawk, and she had landed near him, but also behind him. She was smart.
Lary could feel his whole body begin to shutter at the awsome sight of such a large beast...He was trapped, and knew that his life would shortly end, just as soon as his big friend awoke to find him trembling beofore it. To keep from falling over becausse of trembling knees, Larry sat down, very carefully, and waited for a plan of escape.
