Tongue Out Odd News January 2009

To start the year off, a feelgood story

Quote:

Baby born during trans-Atlantic flight to Boston

BOSTON – There were 124 passengers on Northwest Airlines Flight 59 when it left the Netherlands. There were 125 when it landed in Boston.

Phil Orlandella, a spokesman for Logan International Airport, says a woman went into labor and gave birth to an apparently healthy baby girl over the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday during the eight-hour flight from Amsterdam.

Orlandella said a doctor and a paramedic who were on the flight assisted in the birth. He said the plane landed without incident about 10:30 a.m., and the mother and baby were immediately taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Orlandella said he did not know the nationality of the mother, but said for customs' purposes the baby was considered a Canadian citizen because she was born over Canada's airspace.
Wonder if TSA gave her grief for not having proper boarding documents?

In any case, a happy and odd new year to you all!

SUPERHERO: Trevor King, 78, the founder of the Westside Mission in Sydney, NSW, Australia, was delivering food to a destitute family when two men arrived to repossess their personal items. When one of the repo men allegedly started pushing the lady of the house around, King stepped forward. "This chap said, 'Get out of the way, you silly old goat' to Trevor," homeowner Ted Ferguson said. "Trevor took him out with one punch." Trevor King was a featherweight boxing champion -- fifty years ago -- and described the scene a bit differently. "This fellow had a go at me so I inadvertently threw my right hand and he collided with it," said King, who suffers from leukemia and a bad heart. When the second repo man saw his partner go down, he repeatedly punched King in the stomach, but when King didn't even flinch, the man fled. (Sydney Morning Herald) ... I think Mr. King has anything but a bad heart.

Though several restaurants in Asia had reportedly been offering delicacies made from various animals' genitals (touted for alleged virility-enhancement), the first restaurant exclusively serving such dishes, the Guolizhuang, in Beijing, opened in September 2006. The staff's nutritionist told BBC News that sheep, horse, ox and seal penises are good for "circulation" and that donkey penis improves the skin. Tiger, she cautioned, even though premium-priced, has no special nutritional value, but snakes (which have "two penises each," she said) are great for sexual potency. [BBC News, 9-23-06]

Both. You should go see an episode of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. Look it up on youtube.

Boy stops pit bull attack with jujitsu choke hold

A 9-year-old Bakersfield boy is being called a hero after he saved a girl and her dog from a pit bull attack.

Drew Heredia said he and a friend were walking a small dog Dec. 30 when a pit bull jumped on the dog. The unidentified 12-year-old girl reportedly tried to save her dog, prompting the pit bull to turn on her.

Heredia said he jumped on the pit bull and applied a choke hold that he learned while taking classes at a Brazilian jujitsu studio in southwest Bakersfield.

"It was kind of a heart-pounding moment," Heredia said. "It was very scary."

He said he held the dog for 20 minutes until an animal control officer arrived.

“At first, I wanted to kick it, but then I thought it’s not a good idea, because it could get my leg,” Heredia said.

The girl was taken to Mercy Southwest Hospital where she was treated for puncture wounds.

The pit bull was quarantined at the animal control office, where it will be euthanized after 10 days. No one has claimed the dog.

The girl's dog was injured, but it's expected to survive. The dog ran away during the attack but returned home Friday afternoon.

Edit: there's a video link at the article, but I can't see it from work.

Man shot by his stepdad ends up in jail with him

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. – A man who police said was shot by his stepfather ended up in the same jail with him after officers discovered outstanding arrest warrants against the victim. Police told The Daily News of Jacksonville that 37-year-old Richard Hayes shot his stepson Thursday night.

Authorities say 21-year-old Michael Bass was holding a bloody towel to his abdomen when paramedics arrived, saying his stepfather shot him.

Deputies then discovered Bass had outstanding warrants for failing to appear in court and took him to jail after he was treated and released from the hospital.

Police said Hayes told investigators he has a bad neck and shot his stepson because he thought Bass wanted to fight him.

The men remain in jail. It's unclear if they have attorneys.

It's clear to me they don't have brains... or at least not a lot of 'em

The police, either... don't they think there *might* be some bad feelings in there?
