I have this problem with Fallout: A Nuclear Post Apocalyptic Adventure and I read that the only way to prevent it is to play it in DOS mode.

This means that I have to open DOS Navigator and enter the game from there, right?

This may be a stupid question, but is it possible to simply open DOS Navigator under Windows XP? Because, whenever I clicked on the program, it stayed open for a few seconds and then closed by itself. I'm guessing it's not supposed to do that, but well, the way I see it, everything's possible.

And when I do open DOS Navigator, am I then in the dreaded DOS mode?

Thanks!

Are you sure? IIRC fallout 1 and 2 only runs on Windows.

However, if you would like to try, do the following:

1. Start-> Run
2. Type "CMD" and hit enter.
3. Do your thing...

Or you can download DOSBox here

DOSBox is a great DOS emulator to run older 286/386 DOS games.

Oh heck, it's been AGES since I've used this.

Forgive my lack of knowledge, but how to run E:\Program Files\Interplay\Fallout\FALLOUT.EXE run using the Start-> Run method?

Eek! I just got DOSBox running but it says 'Drive E doesn't exist!'

EDIT: And I can't press '\' in the DOSBox program, at least not with the same key combo as usually, what's up with that ..?

Thanks.

I think Paladin2000 may be right about Fallout 1 and 2. I've played both of those under Windows 98SE. Isn't there a way to get windows xp to run in a 98 emulation mode?

Well, I don't know what this means, but I'm sure that there's a Windows and a DOS patch for Fallout 1, as seen here.

Ahh, maybe I misunderstood something? If it assists you in helping me, Here is the source where I initially got the idea to start the game in DOS mode.

Thanks.

Strange, what kind of problem are you having, uss? I've played both Fallout 1 and 2 on my computer with XP pro and no issues at all. Unless you're talking about the occasional screen black outs which are nothing more than a minor nuiscence.

The link only mentions problems with Windows 2k and ME. XP should do fine, as with my copies.

Oh, I really dislike the screen blackouts. While they're not too annoying, it always makes the game seem unpretty when the screen has black boxes on it. But I'm not talking about that.

*SPOILER*

My problem is that when I entered the Military Base, killed a few muties and then saved, the game's savegame became corrupt, somehow. Now I can't load anymore! I loaded another just-in-case savegame, and the exact same thing happened when I reached the Military Base! Now, my currently newest working savegame was saved before I went to the Glow. It looks like the only way to go on with the game is to redo the Glow(awwh) finish the Military Base without loading/saving at all(Awwwh!)!

Oh well, this isn't *too* bad - I have both games and I just wanted to finish them both 'for old times' sake.' I had initially planned finishing Fallout 1 today and starting Fallout 2 tomorrow, but the thought of going on to Fallout 2 without seeing those cool scenes in the end of the first one disturbs me.

Here is some guy having the same problem, this time with Windows 98.

Here's another guy with the exact same problem!

Thanks.

Have you tried :
1) Right click on your 'shortcut' Icon
2) Select Properties
3) Indicate "compatibility" (sounds like you might want to try WIN95, but perhaps WIN98 would also work ?
4) Close window
5) left-click on the Icon after indicating compatibility - see if it will save/reload...

I had a Problem with Wiz 8 occasionally minimizing window - then never allowing me to reopen it - needed WIN98 compatibility indicated...

Hope it works for you !

Tom

DOS has been all but eliminated from XP. Sure, you can get a command prompt, but it's not DOS.

You either need an emulator or a DOS boot disk.

Nope Tom, your method didn't work but thanks anyway.

Animal, DOSBox is an emulator/DOS boot disk, right? Well, either it isn't working properly, or I can't figure out how to use that thing.

I think I can't download a savegame from anywhere either, since it takes lots of free space(about 5-15 MBs).

As a last resort, if all else fails, is there any way to play the ending video scene, without having to finish the game?

Thanks(once again ).
