Sad

Well, thought this thread was a good idea so thought I'd test the knowledge of Ironworkers regarding supposedly famous Hungarians. Though I think they will be slightly more known (based on past experience) than Estonians. To make it slightly harder, their names are in Hungarian format (surname first) and in hungarian even though they may not be famous like that e.g. Gyorgy is George.

Sandor Kocsis and Ferenc Puskas were both on the team that should have won the worldchampionship in 1954, but the suckers lost to Germany 3-2.

And as far as i can tell Monica Seles isn't Hungarian, but Croatian.

Edit: yep, i was right, Monica seles was born in Novi Sad. Don't try to trick us Vaskez, it's hard enough as it is.

Not even Franz Liszt or Bartok? Or John von Neumann? Or the inventor of the ballpoint pen, Laszlo Biro?

I'm not trying to trick you! Monika Szeles is hungarian! Novi Sad is the hungarian city of Nagyszombat, taken from Hungary after world war 1! There are still hundreds of thousands of hungarians and Szeles is a hungarian name (it means windy), so at least her dad was hungarian. Yeah, she did take the z out of the name but that's so the americans could pronounce it right.

Heh, on a certain webpage, they are also trying to claim Martina Hingis as hungarian, just because her dad was hungarian and she was born in Kassa (now Kosice) in Slovakia which used to belong to Hungary as well. But I don't count that as her mum is Czech.

I'm sensing a bit of national pride turning into jealousy, Dreamer

None of you guys heard of Rubik Erno? He invented the Rubik's cube.

Well, that makes it a trick question then, doesn't it ? I'm pretty sure that her passport (before she became an American) said "Yugoslavia" and not "Magyarorzsag" or however you spell that.

I knew about four of them - thank god for my interest in classical music.
I suspect I might know a few others if you gave their better known names, because some of them did ring a bell.
I was expecting Erzsébet Báthory in your list, BTW.
