Re: defrag error
Are you running on an administrator-privileged account? Did you do this right from a clean boot? Those can cause problems. Also, is there another defrag running at the moment, by chance? I just discovered mine is set to defrag automatically every Wednesday night...
I've also had problems in the past when there wasn't enough free space, but you're nowhere near that being an issue. Have you run the scan disk looking for errors? Properties on the drive, tools, Check Now for error checking.

Re: defrag error
This is my personal PC. I did do a clean boot, just to see if it would help. Could one of the other programs be taking over for it?
I would think even if it's automatic it would still run?

Re: defrag error
Forgot to ask what OS... and is it still the standard Windows defrag?
If it's currently running, it shouldn't launch another run (although I'd think you'd get a more meaningful error message). Something may be blocking it... look in the Event Viewer (Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer) for clues. You might have to wander around a bit on it... Apparently, some virus critters can also block defrag, among other things. Hate to bring that up, but...

Re: defrag error
Unfortunately, that was the first thing I thought of, when I thought of why this might be happening...and then, I thought of hard drive failure, which could have damaged the disk defrag executable...because, if that's a 160 GB hard drive, I know it's getting kind of on the old side...
So, the first thing I would check would be the SMART data for the hard drive...you can find utilities on the Internet, though I always use Speedfan's built-in SMART abilities. If you don't know what SMART is, it's the hard drive's built-in diagnostic software that monitors the health of the disc. Speedfan is available here, and is also a good tool to have to check your system temperatures, and ensure that nothing gets too hot...but requires a little bit of work to get it to tell you which temperature corresponds to which component. Regardless, there's a tab for SMART monitoring, and a button that says "Perform an in-depth online analysis".

Re: defrag error
Some googling turned up this manual approach to running defrag:
Quote:
It sounds straightforward, but usual precautions and such apply.

Re: defrag error
I hear you... have you run the error check yet?

Re: defrag error
That's what I was referring to earlier on... I think
Open Windows Explorer. Right-click on the hard drive. Select Properties. Go to the Tools tab. Next to Error Checking, click Check Now. Check the boxed to automatically fix and to attempt recovery. Wait... patiently, grasshopper. Don't plan on doing anything else... you could force it to restart.
