I couldn't put the book down until I finished it LOL. I bought it hot off the press way back when (78? 79?)
I turned the movie off within the first half hour though..thought it sucked. I tried to give it another chance but no go, it just rubs me the wrong way in comparison to the way the book got the story across.
I think the end of the world scenario will more than likely mirror the opinion of Salem Kirban (sp?)...people killing each other over the last soy cake.

I thought the first 10 minutes were pretty terrifying, but Molly Ringwald ruined the show for me. I think she did a poor job. BTW...the book was great!

Wasn't there a short lived sit-com with the same premise in the late 80's or early 90's? really stupid show..only thing I remember aobut it was mutant turkeys that drowned when it rained because they were too stupid to look down or some such.

Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, also wrote a novel entitled Tha Last Man in which a terrible plague decimated most of the human race. Has anyone read it? I haven't yet.

Shouldn't this thread be in the 'Books and Movies Discussion' forum, BTW?

(ok subtract the religious connotations for you agnostics and athiests and non-christians) it is still a rather chilling thought.
Start reading into the Dark Tower series and Insomnia, as well as a few of his other more recent books such as Black House, which all tie in together and then you'll be freaked out...

It will be the human engineered bugs that get us if we are going to go out that way.

errr that is assuming we don't suddenly forget all the physical hygene lessons we have learned...the Greeks knew all about keeping clean and bathing...to have it all forgotten or repressed by the civilizations that followed which led to the Bubonic Plague that wiped out about 1/4 of the worlds population...Man is his own worst enemy some times.
Well the bubonic plague was carried by fleas from infested rats... had nothing to do with hygiene...

Well yes you are right, it was fleas on the rats that brought and started the spread of the plague, however, with a bit of modern cleaning habbits you would not have rats infesting your home, and you would keep rodents and furbearing anuimals outside where they belong But all you cat and dog lovers who must absolutely keep your animals indoors, rememder to keep the clean of fleas or you could end up plague bait

I think The Stand is SK's best completed work to date. However, in it he is troubled by what I see as his biggest failure as a writer - he's not very good at closure. He writes a great 8-900 pages, then flobs it all, has no idea what to do, so trundles trash-can in for an anit-climax. He had the same problem with IT - which had terrible problems winding down a wonderfully set-up tale (an end which included a great World-Turtle, a Huge Spider shape, and the necessity of 12-year-olds to have sex w/ each other).

The TV mini-series movie you're talking about (Gary Sinese, right?) was a mediocre interpretation of the book - but did better than most SK movies. SK books should make much better movies than they do.

For the best SK, I'll take The Dark Tower Series. If all goes well, it will never suffer from SK's "closure" problem, as it will never end. Other than this series, I haven't read hardly any SK since I was in 10th-11th grade.

That said, I can't speak for Insomnia and other "newer" SK titles. However, there is no doubt that the Dark Tower series incorporates his "other worlds." ("There are other worlds than this" - who's freaked out by that statement?) SK has written before as to how he views many of his tales and interweaving holistic metaphors and characters together. There's a reason he uses the same names over and over (e.g. bad guys are always Flagg - see Eyes of the Dragon).
