Wow sure makes a guy feel old!But those were the best of times!!I remember getting up and tying my sneekers up on the front poarch early in the morning taking off into the woods and not comming back till dark! Just hiking around,used to carry an okd backpack and start little camp fires to boil creek water and brew instant coffee,than light up a stalk of grape vine for a smoke(imatating mom and dad smoking their lucky strikes).We lived out in the boonies in Ohio back than Beautiful country.Now I live on the central coast of Cal.Still nice but will never be the same.My kids grew up surfing and such but I think thay missed some of the simpler more rewarding things,,,like bumper hitching in the winter(sneeking up and grabbing the rear bumper of a car in the winter and riding along on your boots in the snow..great till you hit a dry spot!!Ah yes I remember the scabs on my knees from those rides!!Also used to drink all the cream off the milk bottles that were delivered to the house,yes they delivered your milk right to your front door!And we only had 3 tv channels!

Brings back memories. We used to fortify the neighbourhood with snow forts on all the roadsides and corners. Had massive snowball fights. Creamed a few cars too - I remember being chased for five blocks by an irate convertible driver once. (Ditched him in the bushes! [img]smile.gif[/img] )

In the summer we used to stay up all friday night playing hide-and-go-seek with an entire block as the playground (fortunately there was no traffic whatsoever where we grew up). Lots of fun. NO parental supervision, and this was when I was in the 8-10 year-old range.

"Mat" night (just before hallowe'en) was always a lot of fun, too. Leaving those flaming bags of dog droppings on peoples doorstoop always resulted in some entertaining chases...

And amazingly enough NOBODY GOT HURT! The responsibility of carrying a firearm was taught from father to son and resulted in one of the safest generations a gun-toting hunters ever brought up.

Nowadays, you have to watch out for the little punks with bb guns that shoot up your signage and windows. Then you complain to their parents and they won't admit that their "little angel" could possibly be doing that kind of damage. Shameful that the police have to be brought into it.

Now that I have a child and am inundated with the safety precautions of today, I am amazed at the lengths to which we (as a society) will go. Marketing departments (i.e. at bottled water companies) or public safety officials (i.e. promote a cause to promote your career) have convinced us to micromanage our lives for safety. It becomes much more apparent, I found, once you become a parent. More than likely, to my wife’s chagrin, my children will hear me say things like “you don’t need a helmet to ride your bike. Why when I was a kid………….” I’m only in my early thirties and already sound like a codger. [img]graemlins/biglaugh.gif[/img]
