My personal favorites: BG2, PS:T, BG1, Bard's Tale series, Shadowrun (Sega Genesis version), original Legend of Zelda, Space Invaders, Adventure, and Pirates.

BG1 & IWD1 (the sequels were good but these were the pioneers), Thief 1 & 2, Riven and Neverwinter Nights (MPer a must though).

Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)

It didn't get a perfect 10 on IGN for nothing.

Well i myself hav many favourites to name a few the FF series on PS2, Devil May Cry 1 and 2, the gidd old Tribes on pc, Diablo 1 and 2, the Warcraft series, Starcraft, Need for Speed Underground, thats an awsome game, and many others.
there really is no best game because everyone has their own opinions on what a good game is.

Its so hard to pick, but how about a by-genre breakdown ... then you have to pick a favorite genre .. for me it is a toss-up between RPG and simulations

Simulation: Railroad Tycoon (original Sid Meier version)
Real-time Strategy: StarCraft
First-person Deathmatch: Doom II
RPG: Original Wizardry .. although Wiz8 will overtake soon
Arcade: Ms. Pac Man (yes, I am that old), tied with Galaga
