Well, I still can't leave town, either.
Thursday and Friday Activision was trying to help me. Tried everything they said, but still doesn't work. Guess they gave up on me, cause I haven't heard anymore from them.
Oh well, have to return the game in a couple of days anyway so I can get a full refund

I get a complete system hang every time I approach the fountain in the crypt near where Respian is. Anyone else have this problem?

I've gotten it work. I reinstalled win98 by running setup.exe from the win98 disc. I got an e-mail from activision that said the following:
Here is what the previous customer support representative meant by running
the SFC program. To do this, go to your Windows Start / Run and in the
space, enter the command line:

SFC

this will run the Windows System File Checker and make sure you let it
restore all Windows files.

If the problem persists, I will need you to send me your DirectX info in
order for me analyze your system properties and further assist you with your
problem.

Go to your Windows Start Menu / Run / and type DXDIAG. A DirectX Diagnostic
Tool menu will pop up, there should be an option at the bottom to to save
all information. Save that text and attach it to a reply email and send it
back to us. (Also if you know your motherboard brand and model, please
include that information in your reply too.)

HELP!!!!!!!!!
Same problems leaving town. I've tried both installs, vitual
memory(decreasing actually helped some, but not much), increasing
and decreasings settings, with virus scan running and not. NOTHING
seems to help. I talked with Activision Tech Support today, He
suggested to COPY the CD's to my hard drive (seems that some CDROM's
are have problems getting a good install done) I tried to COPY over
my existing install(did not work), then attempted to INSTALL from
this copy(received a message that I needed to uninstall first)I then
COPIED to a new directory and attempted to 1st run the program (nope)
then install.....which looked good until it requested CD 2, which had
been copied to the directory, but the program could not see it. HELP
