Hmm.. levelling up my fighter and i want to add another weapon proficiency feat but i cant work out the distinction between "great" and "large" sword...

I basically want him to specialise in lonswords as opposed to 2 handed swords ???

I wish they'd keep the terminolgy the same..

any help appreciated

For a great sword, picture a sword taller than you, that you can't even lift.
A large sword is just a sword that is quite long. A great sword is two-handed, a large sword (which includes scimitars, my favourite - Salvatore did a good job) is one handed.

Large Sword = Longsword. If you want to specialize in this, choose the Large Sword feat.

Greatsword is just that: the big, two-handed sword. Two-handers are nice, because they give you 1.5 your strength bonus. A fighter with 18 strength and a two-hander will do +6 damage instead of +4.

That, by the way, is true of any weapon requiring two hands, such as spears, halberds, and even the lowly quarterstaff.

I love rapiers and kurki- wish they had them in IWD II, they were sweet in NWN for finesse types.

BTW, if your fighter is a high Str type, then I very much reccomend going with great swords - large swords I like for paladins, they just might make one he would like (not going to spoil it).

Yeah rapiers rock! The 18-20 base critical range is awesome.

I agree with Gimli regarding the great sword. 2-handed weapons gain a 50% strength damage bonus over single handed weapons

Kurki were really cool too - one of my favorite NWN characters was a Halfling Ranger(1)/Rogue(X) who dual wielded them. They also had the 18-20 critical range; taking improved critical with the kurki (it was a weapon-specific feat in NWN) doubled that to 15-20; then with Keen kurkis, it was 12-20. Add 10d6 or so of sneak attack damage to that, along with weapon finesse to help him hit and a halfling's maxed Dex, and he was one pint-sized engine of death

With a 2 handed sword, do you lose any # of attacks per round? For instance, if I had a fighter w/ 3 attacks per round, when I equip him w/ a 2 handed sword, does the attacks per round drop? Just curious b/c it would seem to me that the heavier swords would be harder to swing 3 times in one round.

Nope. If you're entitled to, say, 3 attacks per round, that's what you get with the weapon equipped. The one exception is the crossbow. Only one attack per round with that, unless you have an xbow that gives extra attacks.

Also I think the game has an attack cap built in, set at 5 attacks per round. So even if you were entitled to more, you wouldn't get them (bad for high level dual wielders, or hasted monks/fighters). Once you hit that cap, nothing is more powerful than a 2-handed weapon and high Str IMHO, as every attack does as much damage as possible, and has no -BAB like dual wielding.
