does any one know the answer to this? (and i do know there are a lot of very intelligent people out there so give this a try!)

i want to play multiplayer in prep for NWN, i have a 56k connection so obviously the conventional ways are out.
now i've been thinking there must be a way to cut down the traffic, i've been given the idea of changing the ip address that the comp dials out to on a tcp/ip mp game of bg (1 ,2) so that it dials directly to the comp hosting the game (that should be as easy as just creating a tcp/ip game while on the internet and waiting for the person to "dial in" using the ip address! if you know this is wrong or impossible or i'm way oversimplifying thimgs then post all of your thought (please remember the moderator will edit )

thank you

If you play with someone in your home town, maybe you could use your modem the good ol' BBS way. That is, by dialing his phone number and "hooking" to his computer. I don't know any Windows program that would allow you to do so, but it should exist (consider it like a very slow LAN connection).

But, for TCP/IP you need an internet provider to link your computer to the network. You can't improvise yourself as one. If the game host is an internet provider with support for dial-up (which i doubt ), you could do it.

Anyway, the bottlenecks in the network (where information passage is slowed down due to heavy traffic) are not significative with a 56K. To check if you hit a bottleneck between you and your game host, do a traceroute.

I'm not a hacker, so maybe all i say is BS... i don't even remember how to do a traceroute in DOS.

(right?wrong?,ideas post here)
