Thanks for the hug LB

I'm almost the only person in my family that cares much for music. Only one that listens to it much, and only one other can play an instrument....

Aww, Nebby wants hugs? Too damn bad!

Let's look at my family's music history, shall we? My mother's father was a jazz musician, and her sister was a violinist in addition to my mother herself playing piano and flute. On my dad's side, we have two generations of trumpeters (third one beginning ) and my brother plays french horn. I'd say we have quite a legacy going on here...

That IS quite a legacy Cody! That's cool!
I am the only one in my family who doesn't play any type of instrument.
I did play the drums when I was 7 and 8...learning by playing along with old beatles songs and popular 60's music. The drums belonged to my brother and he got me started after he got into the guitar. His best friend got a drum set and another got a bass so that they could "be a band". Wanting to "keep it fair" my brother announced that the drummer would be whichever of us could play "Wipe Out" by the end of the week and then he refused to let me practice so naturally I lost.
Swindled by my mother into thinking she would let me get a sax if I mastered the recorder first, I did what she asked and was then told I couldn't go on to the sax because "we had guitars aplenty in the house and I should learn to play one of those". Well I tried but my young tender fingers weren't ready for callouses and I found the attempt to be more painful than it was worth.
Everyone but me plays guitar...my mother plays Flamenco, my brother moved on to a banjo and my father could pick the blues like it was nobody's business but his own. My little brother plays rock (rhythm and lead) and the rest of them "strum" a little but can't really play anything lol.
I listen to a wide variety of music with much appreciation but have never decided to plunge into playing anything on my own and I have no regrets so don't feel sorry for what my brother and mom did lol...I can do many other constructive and artful things with my hands to keep me busy and give me satisfaction while letting others fill the background with sound.

Well Moni, it sounds like your family has quite a lot of musical inclination as well. Personally I think you should've tried trumpet, but that's subjective. Souds like you got jipped by your brother... ah well, im guessing his 'band' didn't last too long, did it? That sounds like something my mom would do, but luckily she hasn't yet. I'm pretty glad too, since I don't wanna learn guitar, my hands are too delicate to pluck at a guitar's strings.
I listen to most music 'cept for country (ugh!), (c)rap, and modern mainstream pop, but over everything else I prefer punk rock. It's got such a great message, at least the band I listen to does... Anti-flag's my fav. If you want I'd tell some people about my trumpet stories or how I first got into punk rock, but the second one involves a tad bit of... illegal activities. Yep, my brother's band never made it farther than the garage but when he was a teenager, he taught his new best friend how to play and that guy has done some stuff with bands, touring and opening for bigger bands in the midwest states...but he is into country (yuk lol) so I don't listen to his music and won't except maybe to hear the song he is currently writing that he says I inspired when I got in touch with him recently (after not seeing him or talking to him in 20 years)...I hope it is not stupid LOL!

Tell whatever stories you feel comfortable telling! Just make sure the statute of limitations has passed for anything you may be arrested/prosecuted for by telling here.

A country artist?! aagh! I hope that song's not too bad, but if he's respectable it should be decent.

I suppose I'll tell the trumpet story first, since it involves slightly less covert ops (if I tell the other one will anything happen to me? Don't think so, just wanting to make sure). Originally I wanted nothing to do with my brother in band, and since he played french horn in concert and trumpet in jazz I was going to make sure to avoid both of those. My ex, whom I had broken up with on the first day of school (it was a real spectacle, but that's another story!) was also deciding to play french horn, so obviously I had quite a repellant there. Anyways I was trying out all the instruments, and it turned out that I couldn't get a sound out on most woodwind instruments, and couldn't get low enough for low brass. My heart was actually set on percussion, but since I needed to know piano for the first semester I was pretty much out of luck there. So the only choices left to me really were trumpet and french horn, so I'm glad I chose trumpet. Gives me an excuse to have an ego, and I get a lot of the really fun parts!

LOL Let's hope it is not nasal and whiney!

If you tell the other one I doubt will anything happen to you, I was pretty much just teasing you, but honestly I am not positive since I don't know who reads this forum that might be involved in law enforcement or how serious the alleged crime was but remember confessing to a crime on the internet can be considered as prosecutable as confessing to your local law enforcement agency and if anyone IS paying attention, well something could come of it...you might want to keep that story under wraps or send it to me in an e-mail...I promise you I am not a cop or an informant LOL!

Cool story with the trumpet! My best friend's brother was in band and he played the trumpet. I tried it out one weekend but my jaws got sore after a while LOL...does that ever stop? I mean, do your jaws get conditioned to playing it?

LOL I hope not too! Actually by getting in trouble I meant like something happening to me here, I'm not too worried about anything happening to me in RL because I'm pretty much fearless 'cept for heights and spiders.

Well, the jaw pain never really goes away. You can condition yourself so that you can go longer without it, but if you play long enough it doesn't matter how good you are, it's gonna start hurting after awhile. That's about the only downside of it, is that no matter how hard you work you're always going to get something like that, louse embochure (that's what its called, I think).

Anyways, g'night Moni! Hope you sleep well.

Good luck Seph... I've already heard 'em all.

I've got quite the musically inclined family as well. Growing up my parents had their own band, guitars, drums, keyboards, distortion, all of it . My older brother is at least acquainted with just about everyone in the music industry here in Minneapolis. All of my uncles play or used to play instruments of one type or another (guitar and keyboards mostly). I used to play viola in the school orchestra but I stopped after I started homeschooling about 3 years ago ( ). My grandpa has played everything from guitar to organ. My little brother is showing signs that he may one day become a musician of one sort or another. So I've kinda got a history in my family too. No traditional school band stuff though, my family is a little weird

Sorry to hear about your problems at school (and in general) Seph, I am SO happy I moved to Germany, school is a LOT better here. And as I said once... anyone who thinks that someone is a Nazi because one of his ancestors was German is nearly as racist as they were .
Hm... in the school I went to in the US, the band was the popular group and we orchestrans were by far in the minority! Of course, maybe that changes later (I moved to Germany after 5th grade, so I wouldn't know).
I also have quite the musically inclined family. I play piano and violin, my brother plays cello and once played flute in band, gave it up later though. My father plays violin and guitar, my mother plays guitar too. One of my cousins plays oboe and piano, the other plays violin and is now studying in hopes of becoming an opera singer!
