"Double your money" cash machine prompts queues in British village
Tue Apr 27, 8:42 PM ET Add Offbeat - AFP to My Yahoo!

LONDON (AFP) - News tends to spread fast in a British village. Especially when the news is that the local bank's cash machine is paying out twice the money you ask for.

The generous automated teller machine (ATM) belonged to a Barclays Bank in Wooler, a small community in Northumberland, northeast England, where a drawer for 10 pound (15 euros, 18 dollars) notes had been wrongly loaded with 20s.

Within an hour of someone noticing this phenomenon on one evening last week, a queue stretched most of the way down Wooler's main street, the Daily Telegraph reported on Wednesday.

One woman even arrived in a taxi, still in her nightdress and curlers, and by the time the bank re-opened the next day, 65,000 pounds had been withdrawn.

The landlady of the village's local pub -- who, like most people quizzed by the newspaper, claimed not to have been involved personally -- called it "the busiest night in Wooler for years".

Adding to the general joy, Barclays has announced that it will not be requiring customers to hand over their extra cash.

"We know who took money out of the ATM, but can't pinpoint which ones have had too much money so we won't be asking for the money back," a spokesman for the bank told the Telegraph.

wish that happened to me

that actually happened once on this setup. It was to see if it would make a difference if you were in the rich or poor part of a country. One man actually stayed for over an hour drawing cash just for the extra Ł20 that came out every time. It was quite funny to watch
