O god yes it's useful ABSOLUTELY...

Mid-level clerics can cause undead [vampires, mummies, ghasts, shadows, skeletons, etc] to flee; but when they get to high level (around say 17th, 18th) clerics can actually do *damage* to undead - BTW you gotta see that effect for yourself to really appreciate Turn Undead... and Evil-aligned clerics can CONTROL undead... Check it out, definitely.
It's a big deal because undead attacks can be really damned nasty (esp mass vamps) and there's a lot of undead in the game.
(Note, though, that a cleric can't attack or cast spells AND Turn Undead at the same time.)

Just be patient, like Mahlennacht says you can't do anything while you are turning so make sure your cleric is protected by a few fighters..

Once you get to 12th/13th level it gets really good you can destroy ow level undead like shadows and later (in ToB) you can melt pretty much anything that comes your way (I don't play evil clerics).

Wait about as long as you would for a thief to detect traps-it takes a round of game time to turn but you can move while you are doing it.

When turning undead it's important to turn off the AI first, otherwise your cleric will inevitably start attacking or casting spells, and stop turning.

Ok, who said Turn Undead was usedless?! Someone hasn't tried having a lvl 25+ undead hunter and using it. I can blow apart all the liches in the game, and make Kangaxx's lich form flee before me Now, if thats usedless then you must be very confused
