It is the end of a month the US-led coalition in Iraq would rather forget. Nine more foreigners have died in attacks against America's allies.

In separate incidents, seven Spanish intelligence agents and two Japanese diplomats have been killed in what has been the worst month for casualties so far.

The attack on the intelligence team happened around 45 kilometres from Baghdad. They had been travelling in unmarked vehicles when guerrillas struck them with rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles.

Witnesses said crowds surrounded the bodies, some kicking them as they made pro-Saddam chants.

Another agent was said to be injured in the attack.

Spain's Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar has been a staunch supporter of the US-led war and defied opposition at home to send around 1,300 peacekeepers to Iraq.

They are serving with the Polish-led multi-national contingent in the south of the country.

Spain had already lost two other military personnel. One was the victim of the suicide attack on the United Nation's headquarters in Baghdad, the other an intelligence officer shot in the street.

Just over two weeks ago, 19 Italians were killed in an attack on a military police base. So far, Britain has lost 20 soldiers in military action.
