Those a damn good scores though, and I have not run into any bugs yet. But yep, a patch was out at release--it seems these 'patches on release' are becoming commonplace....
PS: Voice acting isn't bad at all. This could be game of the Year--or second.
User ratings always have an unfair bias to them - hence why we have professionals rate games rather than user fans. That's not to say that sites like IGN and Gamespot don't have any bias, but user fans who have been hyping games for long periods of time tend to judge games based on their intense dedication to the game. Infrequent players also tend to score higher/lower (usually higher) because they don't look for the same thing as the 'pros' do.

Game of the year? Considering the onslaught of amazing games this year, that's saying a lot. Just take a look at the list - God of War 2, Metroid Prime 3, Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Assassin's Creed, and the list goes on.

Those are consoles. PC Gaming is totally different.

You call gaming journalists professionals? The same guys who give Oblivion a 9 and an awesome review and who, when writing a review for the 'next' rpg, bash Oblivion because of it's flaws?

Also, I'm pretty surprised at this game. It has even managed to please the Codex, which only really really good games manage to...

Gamespot and IGN both gave Oblivion a 9.3, which is an incredible score.

As a general rule, I don't believe scores by user reviewers. I really enjoyed Zelda: Twilight Princess, and would give it a score well above 9/10. Some reviewers ranked it below 9/10 for certain reasons - blandness of the music, tacked on Wii controls, few new innovations, etc. These are things that should be taken into consideration that many users would not do.

edit: Plus Assassin's Creed is also a PC game.

I too go by user reviews. Not 1 or 2 of them, but I glance all of them usually. Users aren't biased or bought, and will not hold back when bashing or praising a game. I do the same on Amazon.com because most of the pro reviews are slanted or "sponsored". Ebay for example, is virtually policed by user reviews and ratings and is very successful using that system. The community decide, as the gaming community should too.

Especially for such a mediocre game...

So is anyone here offended by the "huge" amount of foul mouthing and nudity in this game? I can imagine it is a rare example of a game that goes reasonably far in it's maturity.

I'm as offended as i'd be if they did the unthinkable and added blood and gore in games They're all pixels, still can't believe it's been censored in the US, wtf? That san Andreas game was worse.

I just picked up the Witcher, and am about to apply the patch before I start playing. I'll put up my impressions tomorrow, unless I'm so busy playing that I can't be bothered.
