Occasionally, when I start my computer, I get the message 'Can't detect keyboard, press F1 to continue'.

Who is designing these systems?

I would suspect someone is messing with you... that sounds like a familiar urban legend-style message.

The message comes from the BIOS not the OS so it's unlikely to be MS related. Pretty stupid tho', I've seen it before and never really thought much about it except to reboot.

You must be running a very old build of OS, or a OS of a different genre.
However, the message is quite true and quite effective on a machine that is between 10 and 50 years of age. Back in the day, the F1 key was to the keyboard, as Ctrl+Alt+Del is to windows modern era.

So, let the rest of the cat out. How old is your sys? Which OS do you have?

I've seen this happen as the computer runs the post (Power On Self Test). The BIOS checks to see if the keyboard is there by sending a signal that lights the 3 kb lights. If there is no keyboard installed or if there is no response from the kb the error is displayed. I don't think it's the OS.

I have a Win 98SE and it displayed some messages about half a year ago. They were: "Unable to make connection with keyboard. Press F1 to abort or F2 to retry.", "Your modem is not responding. Please download new drivers." and "Your monitor is not responding and/or is not connected."
I love those guys...
