Camera on your canine
By Louisa Hearn February 13, 2006 ------------------------------------------------ Ever fretted about what your pooch gets up to once you've dropped him off at doggie daycare? A Sydney dog-care centre has found the solution with a new "dogcam" that lets owners peek at their pets all day long. The webcam refreshes every few seconds and the screen can be minimised for surreptitious scrutiny while the owner performs other computer-based activities. Leanne Stacey, business development manager for an IT company and owner of two dogs said she tries not to spend too much time snooping on her dogs, but loves checking in on them when she gets the chance. "I get to see shots of them wrestling, then they might go off and have a drink and then I might see them playing in their tunnel," she said. Amanda Raine, owner and director of the Dogs@Play centre said: "Many of us want pets but have small outdoor areas and we often have to work long hours. Our dogs come once or twice a week and really benefit from it." However she said some owners fret about someone else caring for their dog. "Using the webcam, they can see which dogs they hang out with, what games they like, but more importantly they can see that their dog is happy and safe and in a managed routine of socialisation, exercise and play," she said. Ms Stacey's dogs attend Dogs@Play up to three times a week and she said it was nice to watch her dogs socialising with others. "It gives them some intellectual stimulation and encourages good behaviour," she said. link: www.smh.com.au

Funny, I thought the exact same thing as Sir D when I read the article.
I think people who use this service are in the same category as people who rent extravagant places at the kennels for their cats. Whenever we leave our pets at a kennel, there is always some gigantic fake house for a cat or dog, that is almost always occupied. I honestly don't think my cat could care less, as long as he has someplace to eat. Whatever makes the owners happy, I guess...
