There is no hard rule that states that white *has* to go first. I have played many matches where black went first just as a matter of course.

It can also be argued that there is just as much advantage to going first as there is to going second and seeing how your opponent opens.

Finally chess was invented ***long*** before races were tagged with inaccurate labels like 'black' or 'white'.

It should also be noted that black has also moved first in the history of chess. I can't find my chess books, I think I left them in storage far, far away, so I don't have a reference on hand for the details. I remember clearly that white moving first is a relatively new tradition.

It all boils down deciding who goes first by placing a piece for each side in a fist and having your opponent choose a hand. This determines who goes first. If it's the first game of a series, players alternate colors and therefore first move each game. One of the colors has to go first for this popular method to work.

It's really silly to think of it as racist IMO.

Worf stood because he's Mr. security. You can't be ready for battle and be sitting! Same with Tuvok, though that may be a Vulcan preference, like its more logical to stand.

well i think chess is racist becuase all the green people on the planet aren't reprisented. what about the martians? and the ill people? and what about the people who are just lunatics and paint themselves green? i think chess should be abolished.

*Note* this is not a serios post. i love chess. its fun. its made mind boggelingly obviose when i say martians are green which, proven by marvin the martian, can be shown they are in fact not.

C'mon guys & galls: think!!

White goes first, but who gets to play white? You could flip a coin to decide who gets white? So its in no way a racist thing, its a random thing (unless the higher ranked player automatically goes first).

And also, it is in no-way unfair that white should begin, because when I would play against Casparov and I would be white, he would probably kick my ass anyway. The only difference between white and black is that white can be more offensive oriented and when he/she plays that way, black is very much forced to play defensive. So its a matter of style really.

Spirits Forever: what ever gave you the idea to post this topic in the first place?! I'm very curious...
