Spare a thought for those working for my company right now. Another victim of the post-high-tech recession, my company today is laying off 600 people, 1/3 of its workforce. I don't know if I'm on the list or not but should by the end of the day. Makes me sad, seeing all the blood, sweat and tears that people have put into trying to build something great. Hopefully I'll be able to post again this evening saying I'm still here

That sure sounds gruesome, the tension, both your own and among your co-workers, must be horrendous and unbearable. And they sure expect you to "just keep working", aren't they ?

I work for a Big Banking/Mortgage comp in the states and we just layed off 60,000 people nation wide this quarter. Lost 20 out of 50 in our dept. Know what you are going through. Good Luck.

Yeah pretty much - they expect some attrition afterwards I'm sure as people become disgruntled with the company. It's more a case of either work with us to become profitable or find somewhere else that you're happier. The thing is with these things (among other companies as well) that the people's ability has nothing to do with the decision - its more that the hightech companies grew too fast, spent too much money and had a shitty business model. Small comfort for those that have to look for other jobs though. A year previously it would have been a lot easier with the flying job market. This year? Probably a lot harder I'd say. There's a huge meeting going on right now with a lot of people which I'm not in so I think that I made the cut. Hope so, I'm fed up with sweating! Thankx for your thoughts.

Been there, three times, done that (survived). I also work in banking. During the first big cutback in 1992, we held a "death watch." We would find out who was let go and pass the word on. It was VERY ugly. A lot of fine people, who were also terrific assets to the company, were let go. You would not believe the number of incompetent twits who emerged unscatthed and promoted.

Well, we one of the top five biggest banks in the nation. So it probably wasn't that big of %. Still scares the living crap out of me. I'm too young to become a statistic . . .
