I can't quite get the trick to asking vendors if they have any gadgets to sell.
How exactly do I do this?

They either have them or they don't. Just go through their inventory. Crock and Anna have some and so Does Fuzzfass.

Save just before starting the conversation the first time, and reload to change inventory. You can do this every day if not all you want that they have is in their inventory

The Rapax vendors offer Custom pieces, just talk about custom ...

Umpani PX has some stuff - if you enlist (otherwise it's just a flag).

Ferro and Antone have no gadgets.
Kunar sells a part for expendable gadgets. (Gunpowder) and Fuzzfas sells the other part (empty bottle)

See what I mean? I just made "Avatar" and I get 4 stars. My Elminster avatar was much nicer!
