Military Career

How many kids here at IW plan on going into the military later in life?

I would like too, but I am not sure exaley what I would do. My first intentions were to become a US Ranger, but I am not sure I could succeed at that, only 10% of the orginal recruits make it all the way. I was thinking about doing something involved with Atrillery, but I am not sure.

Anyone else?

if you go army, the only one i know anything about and i know little, try going for signal corps. you'll learn how to play with computers. it'll give you a lot to do when you get out, like get lowballed on a job offer like my husband!

You shouldn't be discouraged by the fact that only 10 per cent makes it, Iron_Ranger. If you really want, you should always try.

I wouldn't mind going in the army, but it's nothing for me. I have difficulties making my homework even now.. can you imagine ignoring commands? I bet this conversation could be poppin' up:

Drill Sergeant: "Private! Your bed is not neatly done! Gimme ten!"

Me: "Now what's the point in ten push ups?"

Drill Sergeant: "Are you disobeying my orders, private! Give me 25! NOW!"

Me: "Geez man! Lighten up! I just asked what the point in push ups was!"

Your first step will be to take the ASVAB (apptitude test). Talk to your local recruiter. Listen to everything he says with a big grain of salt. Not that they lie, but they are evaluated by the numbers they bring in. If you are interested in college, considder ROTC or enlisting with the National Guard. Most Guard programs have college tuition plans that beet the GI Bill. Plus you still qualify for the GI Bill. The Army has a whole range of career fields, anything you want to do, they have it.

Ha.. the Dutch Army? They hardly offer a future. They just disbanded another 10% of the Armed Forces due to budget cuts (If I'm not mistaken).
Besides, nothing ever happens. Our politicians are too chicken to send troops any place dangerous. *shrugs. I guess we have the US for that

I applied to join the Royal Air Force as a General Electrical Technician in January. The aptidute tests and the medical went very well, but I really let myself down in the interview...

Now I have to wait till next February before I can re-apply.

A word of warning: The interview is as important as anything else...don't let yourself think that you've got a place before it's confirmed in writing!

Remember the very first thing you need to consider iswhat you want out a military career. Do intend to stick it long term for 20-30 years or just a stint? Do want to learn job skills or just have an experiance/ fun? Remember you are using 4 years of your life that may not seem a lot, but anything in your early 20's will impact what you do. The thing about the Rangers are how many of them use it just as a stepping stone to Army Special Forces. Not to be discouraging, but you need to be in good physical condition. If you don't enjoy heavy physical activity, you may want to consider a diffrent mos.
All the services have something to offer counting on what you want out of it. If you want to see some of the world before going on with life, theres the navy. Like everything else you pay oyur dues by doing a lot of scut work, but in a four year term you can see a lot of the world, and learn some good job skills. Downside, if you have a serious significant other, this will definetly put a streain on your relationship because you will barely be home. The Air Force is great if you just want to make a career of the military and want something comfortable.
If you want reserve duty while going to college you can either try to learn supplemental skills or go combat arms to have fun in the field. The thing is, if theres alot the military can offer counting on what you want, you'll be surprised by the number of occupations there are, just figure out what your after before signing up.

The thrill from jumping from a perfectly good airplane while in flight wears off after the first few real jumps!

The fact the Army issues you boots, so you can walk to your destination!

However, I chose to ride. We were termed whispering death from both our Allies that fought with us, and the Foes that we destroyed. There is nothing more fearsome, (not even artillery) than a formation of M1A1s on the hunt!

Start training now. Build youself up, complete the following, and let your heart and gut decide the rest. DO NOT TRY TO DO THIS THE VERY FIRST TIME. Work into a gradual routine. If you are 18yr old male.
82 perfect push-ups in 2 minutes.
85 perfect sit-ups in 2 minutes.
2 mile run in 11:45 minutes/seconds. Min 15:45
I will not haunt you with the ruck marches, but be prepared to march with a full ruck for long distances. This is a long and slow build up.
To be a sky soldier you can never settle for second best, or the minium. You must strive to be the best.
