What portrait did you use for your main charecter? I used custom ones, d/l off kirith or something.

I always use customs ones, the npc's in the game look like they'd just escaped from the Asylum.

I kept the NPCs the same, but I always use stuff from www.kirith.com, it has some awesome stuff.

i downloaded a bunch from kirith, but cant figure out how the hell to install them and make them work ingame. any tips???????

If you've downloaded them from Kirith, then they will have absurdely long file names. The first thing to do is to rename them using 1-7 characters. Create a sub-directory within your SoA folder named "Portraits" (case sensitive) and transfer all large and small portraits here. During character generation, simply select custom when browsing through the default portraits and you can set your large/small portraits.
