Why is the portrait pak a requirement to play EFU?

I'm not sure that it is, really. If you don't you may meet various headless pcs and npcs, I find that quite scarey.

Its not a requirement.... rather if you don't have it people's who do use the pack will appear to you with white boxes where their portraits usually are.

Optional Portrait Pack #1
EfU "All In One" Portrait Pack 1 - 72 MB
EfU "Split Up" Portrait Pack 1 - 10 MB

There are two flavors (each the same). Download the all in one pack, which is 72MB, or for the dial-up people, I have split the huge file into 10.5Mb and there are 8 files.

Optional Download, but recommended! This amazing portrait pack adds over 100 high quality portraits you may use as your character's portrait! All you need to do is unzip/unrar these into your /NWN/Portraits directory, and the next time you create a character, check out all the amazing new portraits you can choose from!

Optional, but is cool to have

Actually I think in order to use them at character creation they may need to go into the override folder ?????? or is that just the extra CEP heads I'm thinking of ?

You mean the folder to put the portraits in? You have to make one... just add one to the main NWN folder, and put the portraits in there.
