Ok, the ranger has an extra attack if not using a shield, which means they start with 2.5 attacks per round. The fighter starts with 1.5 attacks per round, and I dont remember how many they end up with.

My question is will a ranger get more attacks per round as they level up, keeping up with a fighter who has ***** in his weapon? If so I see no reason to use a single class fighter, cause the ranger has a significant advantage in the early game, not to mention the spells later.

The manual states that the ranger only gets the bonus attack from 1h swords, which is incorrect. I just made a ranger with great sword and axe and he gets the 2.5 with both. Am I missing anything?

Rangers get a bonus ApR when using a single-handed melee weapon without a shield.

Warriors get an additional 0.5 ApR at level 7 and level 13.

Warriors get an additional 0.5 ApR at Specialisation, and a further 0.5 ApR at Grandmastery.

Ergo, by level 13, the Ranger can have 3.5 ApR, while the Fighter has 3 ApR.

The Fighter however... has a shield.

Both have their pros and cons, and ApR is not the end all be all deciding factor.

Besides, the Paladin will kick both their butts.

Forgot about shields. Duh. That evens things out.

Rangers get the extra attack with 2h weapons too, despite what the manual says. So a ranger is clearly better for swinging 2handers.

Why would you want to forget about shields? That would be delibrately discriminating against the Fighter.

The ***** also increases damage and THAC0 a fair amount, and a ranger doesn't get that. The fighter also levels faster than the ranger.

Overall I think the fighter is better, but both have advantages,

Usually The fighter will be more meatier as well more, HPs. But both classes have there advantages and disadvantages. The fighter does make for a more solid tank.

Fighter:

Levels up faster, but this is only a starting advantage. Both the Fighter and the Ranger will cap at level 30.
Deals more damage per hit
Can obtain better THAC0

Ranger:

Can potentially deal more damage per round, but at the expense of using a shield. At lower difficulties, this may be a neglible concern, but at higher difficulties, it will become a liability. I say to heck with the additional ApR and slap on a shield.
Can cast some Druidic spells.
Can Stealth, but at the expense of armour. You might as well use an Invisibility spell.
Can use some Ranger specific items.

~~~~ ~~~~
It may seem unlikely, but the Ranger will actually make a better tank eventually. Personal buffs from Druid spells is the key, not to mention access to special Ranger-only items.
Ranger all the way! the added defense of ranger only items (rogue's cowl comes to mind) acts like a shield for them, they attack faster, and there is one huge distinction that places them above fighters:
The MC cleric/ranger. All cleric spells, all druic spells, and all ranger pwnage.
Is there any ranger only items in original IWD? I haven't seen any.
My friend has also said that he once found scimitar that is only usable with C/R.
Unfortunately, I have not played IWD without HoW for years, so I can't recall offhand.
