The issue of why someone is stealing it is a good question.

My thoughts...

Option 1: To hold it for ransom. 'Course, that's what happened the last time, and it didn't work out too well.

Option 2: To sell it on the open black market. Well, as has been pointed out, it is rather famous, so selling it will be difficult.

Option 3: To sell it to a prearranged buyer. IOW, someone offered to pay for it ahead of time. Most practical, since you don't have to find a buyer. Obviously, this would be a very private collection...

Option 4: the secret message thing. Hey, when you've had enough to drink, anything sounds good

It will be interesting to see what happens.

For some reason I can't remember that, exactly what happened?

nope, you guys have it all wrong, the reason it was stolen is because the Aliens Abuducted it, because it is the only interesting thing left on the planet

From above:
In February 1994, "The Scream" was stolen from the museum and remained missing for nearly three months. Police ultimately recovered the work, which is on fragile paper, undamaged in a hotel in Asgardstrand, about 40 miles (65 kilometers) south of the capital, Oslo. Three Norwegians were arrested.

At the time, investigators said the trio tried to ransom the painting, demanding US$1 million from the government. it was never paid.

Ah, perhaps this group has learnt from the other groups mistakes?

"Pay us or we will send you the painting... piece by piece."

I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but that version of The Scream that was stolen recently was not the same one that was stolen in 1994. According to the news I saw, there were 3 different versions of The Scream.

Now, back to lax security as a topic.

It was connected to a silent alarm. Or so I read in the papers up here in Norway.

Actually, Timber, according to The Dallas Morning News, that I read this morning, there are four.

The only possible explanation is that the painting contains hidden coded messages that detail secrets beyond our comprehension, and the thief is on the verge of a major breakthrough. That's the only possible reason for stealing that. Now pass the coffee; we still have 7 more hours of Alias to watch.
Isn't that the story behind the Davinci Code?? I haven't read it myself, but I've heard of it. (who hasn't??)
Well, vaguely... I just finished DVC, but it's more of an Alias "Rambaldi artifacts hidden in artwork" influence at work than "Message scrawled on frame" thing. My friends and I are watching the first two seasons, you see, so I'm just dripping with conspiracy theories at this point.
