That Wiz Ring...
Well...it was put in turbo mode in Icewind Dale! Double 1st AND 2nd -- plus additional 15 percent damage to your cold spells. Ouch. I think the BG1 Wiz ring is fine for a Level 1 vanilla mage. Let's face it; a single spell slot and 1 rock per round are WEAK trappings until your mage gets a few more levels under his/her belt. Technically - the game intended for you to be a mage. Growing up with Gorion and stacks of books. Logical conclusion is that you were to be an arcane master of sorts. The ring is a sensible find -- in fact -- I think they should have scripted Elminister to give you a hint that the ring was there if the game detects the PC is a generalist mage! I'm going to sell the 2nd Ring of Wiz to be fair. Imoen is going to dual to a basic mage with my current game. I actually have an interesting use with the ring now while I wait for Imoen: I recruit Xan to identify items for me. I just stick him in a building in Beregost and swamp out Imoen to have a big identifying party at one of the lodges now and again. Xan is so helpful that way. |

There have been plenty of characters in stories who have grown up surrounded by vast stores of arcane lore.... and ended up as a warrior or somesuch.
And playing through BG1 with a mage character would be hellish in the beginning. A whopping 6 HP is the maximum you can muster at level 1. 2 hits from just about anything and you're down. (Granted you can stick him in the rear, but even then there can be problems.)

That'd be even worse than the ring

Its not that hard to play a mage - I took my Necromancer all the way through with Darkside of the SwordCoast mod. It just means lots of dart-throwing and slinging to begin with in the rear ranks, but by the conclusion of the game, I can assure you its worth it.
The Ring of Wizardry is at least for me, an item of sheer nostalgia to the AD&D goldbox days, especially Curse of the Azure Bonds where you could obtain one that doubled your amount of level 3 and 5 spells. Needless to say, that meant more fireballs and cones of cold for me at the time. I find the 'overpowered' phrase somewhat overpowering in this context, since you can easily compensate by turning up the difficulty level.

Yea...I'm tired of having to worry about not having a thief during a dual class, so I decided to make my PC the mage and leave Imoen a thief.
I'm having fun with my PC and making him bard-like: pickpocket and stealth only before I dual to illusionist. This way I don't miss much while I wait for my thief side to kick back in. Decisions, decisions! And; just don't use BOTH Wizardry Rings if you don't want to spoil...too much... |

Quite frankly, by the time you actually acquire both rings, well, you cant have that many spells
Both rings: 1st level: 4 spells 2nd: 8 spells 3rd: 12 spells 4th: 16 spells... you get the picture. I'm tempted to create one that doubles ALL spell levels... MWA HA HA HA |

i found that ring on my very first playthru. i was constantly checking every square inch of each map i entered. i hated little black spots on the maps and i LOVED r/clicking things to see if i could get more info on them. esp. townies and animals. it was such a fluke that i found it, but i never really understood how great it was because i just didn't do magic. i remember thinking: "pfffft!" and promptly sold it.

I've read of the Ankheg armor but never found it (and believe me, I've tried every square pixel of the field across from Nashkel). I think I read somewhere that it and the ring of wizardry were taken out of later versions of BG, so maybe the TuTu version put them back in?
