I need to know a few things before changing roles.

1. Would turning a priest into a paladin stop them from learning spells?
2. Can bards use a long sword+1?
I also need to know how to learn fiend spells-I'm only using spirituality at the moment.

To respond...

1. A paladin can learn spirit spells the same way as a priest. Your paladin's ability to learn vine spells, however, is cut in half -- half his or her class level, half his or her skill level.

2. Don't remember for sure... but there are plenty of weapons. Might be stuck with a short sword +1, or another weapon. But wouldn't you want your bard playing an instrument... ?

3. The classes who can learn fiend magic are zenmaster, assassin, and warlock. I thought that bards and ninjas could also learn that school, but I may be mistaken. Once you've learned a school of magic, however, you can continue to learn spells in that school. So a warlock turned barbarian could keep learning spells at every level.

Welcome to the board, Eagle eye!!!

What level is your priest?

Priest learn both Spirit and Vine spells whereas a Paladin only learns Spirit - if you change your priest to a Paladin they will have no difficulty learning more Spirit spells but they will be limited as to what Vine spells they may be able to learn. General rule of thumb is don't change class if doing so removes one of the spell classes and your character hasn't learned all the spells in that class that you wish them to know -

Gads, I hope that made sense - If your priest has learned all the Vine spells that you want then go ahead and change to Paladin. If not, concentrate on getting those spells you want to learn before changing.

There is a nice chart on the bottom of page 3 of the BEST TIPS which shows which classes can learn which spell types - you may find that useful.

I believe that Bards can use a long sword+1.

You learn Fiend spells from the magic guild - sometimes from books. What difficulty are you having learning these spells - I'm not sure that I understand.

Bards CANNOT learn fiend spells.

Originally it was designed so, because upon becoming a bard, the character will learn one fiend spell, and the class is now open to the bard. But it is not native to the bard!!!

THanks for the correction! I never did a Bard and was using Saz's chart on page 3 in the Best Tips.

Sazerac has taken it directly from the manual. The manual also has that error.

Not quite -- True as stated if new spells are in a school native to the new class.

If not native, i.e. a Barbarian has none, you can train spells in a school up to floor(school_skill / 2). For example, a Barbarian with Level 7 Stone Magic could learn Stone spells up to level 3.

Exception: Warlock. Though only Fiend and Moon are native, they can train up to school_skill in anything that they've already been native in at some point.

My favorite general kick-ass class ascension is Wizard->Ranger->Paladin->Warlock. This character can learn all spells in all schools before ever going to the Crypt.

Which just makes the game silly

How do u go from Ranger to Priest? I though the starting professions were closed, only promotions and class changes to Elite roles?

You're right, of course, Mr. Creosote.

I've edited it to remove my brain fart
