All dragons sleep. Lets say an unspecified D&D time per Dragon sleep factors will never be known in a 3e game. Every time you meet one they are awake it seems. Auras of unbeleivable power to crazy things to your game characters.

Alright, I will get to the point

According to Tolkien all dragons sleep with one eye open , tough to sneak up on em unless you happen to have a ring of invisibility, and even then your smell will always give you away (also according to Tolkien).

Thats why you are a thief/wizard that knows fly and the spell to travel to the erethreal plane (or similar spell). Go to the plane, fly over the dragon, come back to the material plane, move silently while flying and perform a coup de grace.

You've got to be kidding a dragon can be taken down by a coup de grace!?

well you can always sleep when your dead. Thats been my motto since high school. Dragons are very perceptive even while asleep much like most other animals. It is very hard to sneak up on a dragon because they are light sleepers, and always alert. How do you think they grow to be big strong dragons with all the dragonslayers out there?

I remember once in a P&P AD&D game, me (a thief) and another guy (not so clever fighter) woke up a sleeping dragon. My mouth said: "Here - take this arrow of red dragon slaying and take a shot - you are much better with a bow than I" while my brain was thinking: "Make that fighter believe he can kill the lizzard with that arrow. In the mean time I'll get out of here". That was not very heroic of my character , but fortunately the fighter made his CON check when he was ressurrected a couple of days later .

Not even do dragons sleep very light. When they wake up, they are not at all surprized and are able to fry a fighter, before he can even release a single arrow
