We did it! After much nail biting and sweat England qualified for the 2002 World Cup Finals in Japan and South Korea. Three minutes into injury time at the end of the match England were losing 2-1 to Greece at home. This would mean that Germany qualified and England would need to play off against Ukraine or Belarus. Up stepped captain David Beckham to curl a 20 yard free kick passed the statuesque Greek keeper to send England fans wild and German and Scots fans into despair.

BTW - it probably passed most Americans by, but the US also qualified on Sunday. The match against Jamaica was being played at the time the attacks on the Taleban were announced.

Spare a thought for Ireland who may have to face Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia or Uzbekistan in a playy off.

LOL, I wondered how long it would take for this post to arrive. I thought to myself, gee it's all quiet on the Donut front. Perhaps my good mate has so overdone his celebration that he has actually managed to drink himself insensible. Let's face it, it was either that, a computer meltdown, or a medical emergency. One of the above must have been responsible for the 48 hour delay in your gloating announcement . Well done - I am just waiting to see Australia qualify next month as well.

PS - I think you need to give a big thank you hug to all the Finnish players who were really responsible for your success

Many thanks must go to the Germany centre forwards-who couldn't hit a barn door from five yards- and the Finnish goal keeper.

We were watching the game in the pub-I've never heard language like it up to the second equalizer, god what a terrible game. But at least we're in the world cup now. Yaaah

I'm now hoping we get to the quarter finals-New Year's resolution is to be realistic about England's chances
