well haven't done anything with it yet, but I just need to know, on a scale of 1-10, how difficult is it to set one up? generally

Well I'll assume 1 being easy and 10 being hard. I'd say generally that it's a 5-7. Well that's because the router annoyed me by not allowing me to do a few simple internet tasks...

if you get a linksys 4 port router, i'd say about 1 or 2. .
what you need for an internet sharing network: A Modem (obviously). scince your on cable, that'll be your cable modem. if you were given a USB one, that is no good for this pupose. i doubt it though, and worst comes to worst you can buy a Router/ Modem Combo device A Router. i would suggest the Linksys ones as they are really serioulsy easy to set up. (obviously you dont need this if you get the modem/router combo) Network card(s) or On Board LAN. if you dont have either an intergrated network port or lan on any specific computer on the network, you need to get one. 'Straight Through' cables. Get some Cat5 snagless cables and you can't go wrong . (dont get 'Cross Overs' as you cannot use them on a router, hub or switch etc) A Plan. Yup, planning out where your gonna put everything is the most taxing physical step. you want to ensure that you design it to put the router the least distance away from all the computers, so you can get shorter wires. when you've bought all the stuff and plugged it in, the next step is setting computers up. if you have XP it will do everything for you (except add the IPX protocol used for Diablo multiplayer and such). if you have any other OS then it is more complicated. thus ends the overview of network planning
