Which one has the best voice and backing? I will have to go with Avril and her cd "Let Go" although "Be not Nobody" by Vanaessa ranks also. I am undecided. Anyone hear these cd's back to back before? Nice listen.
Thanks again for the great welcome to this forum. I will stop by soon!

I like Vanessa Carlton, way more talent than Avril Lavigne.
Besides, Piano music done right is just Da Bomb.

In my opinion Avril is just a second rate pop singer with pretentions of a rock personna. Vannessa sings and plays well. If you want to compare young female singer/songwriters then I put my vote in for Nora Jones. I think she is much better than your choices.

I'm impressed by neither, to be honest; not my kind of music. Logic however dictates that Vanessa Carlton has more talent, if only because she doesn't need two *cough* "ghostwriters" to write songs (which Avril does... And then she/they still come up with the incredibly lame lines "She was a girl/He was a boy/Can it be any more obvious?"); and Vanessa actually knows how to play an instrument, which Avril Lavigne only *claims* that she can. There are a lot of pictures available of Avril playing guitar, but from what I've heard, she never actually plays guitar during concerts except for some simple chords.
Voice wise... Vanessa Carlton lisps, sort of. Avril's voice is okay, nothing special however.

AVRIL! Sorry boys, had the pleasure of seeing her in concert and at the MTV award show in Asia yesterday, and she's really really REALLY good when heard live. She might be a poser, but she's a CUTE poser

Talent wise, Vanessa Carlton by far. I quite like her music, the piano stuff is just cool!
But, as a rocker dude, have to say I prefer listening to Avril. She's cool, and fairly hot. But sorry to disagree, live, she is just lost. Lol. And I've seen over 100 artists/bands live. Possibly even around 150. Avril just didn't use her voice well. Anyways, I prefer Avril but Vanessa is more talented.

I really don't listen or like any of them. But, Vanessa Carlton is better I suppose.

Michelle Branch. Her CD's production is better than the other two and there are better songs on it.
