Appears to me that it's not particularly useful - I can see in the dark without it. Neither does it help in detecting invisible creatures either.
So - does infravision have any useful function in BG2?

Uses for infravision scrolls:

1. They're worth money in the shops,
2. They're worth 1000 xp for each mage that can write them to a spell book, and
3. They'll serve in place of toilet paper (a little scratchy, maybe, but ...).

Seriously, the only use for an infravision spell is when you have a party entirely consisting of humans.

Yes, but of what use is the ability? The helm of baludaran also gives the wearer the ability, but afaik in BG2 infravision does not serve a useful purpose (beyond those you've already mentiond )

Some classes (such as humans)cant see in the dark, So npc characters who cant dont already have infravision just walk around bumping in to things when it gets dark. That is the only use I can think of for The helm of baludaran, besides it looks cool.

NOTE: You can enable group infravision under the options menu witch dose make the helm useless.

Yep. Infravision is a useless skill in the game. Sell your Helm and items and buy something worthwhile
