IMHO, I think the ranger kit should allow 3 prof. slots on dual wield (-2 and-4 penalties sucks bigtime), though 2 in standard weapon prof. is fair enough.

UM, it DOES allow 3 in dual wield... It STARTS with 2 automatically, then you can add one more.... try it... I'm a dual-wielding bastard!

Two Words: Dog Figurine.
Two more words: Minsc and Valgyar.

I am coming late to the thread and RudeDawg already pretty much covered everything, but I must add my own 2 cents. I played a Ranger in BG1, kitted him to stalker in BGII and will take him through ToB when it comes out. He was awesome! In BG1, he would stealthily explore an area and allow us to plan our battles. What I had in BGII was a fighter who could sneak about and backstab.

Sure, as a stalker I had to give up a couple of points on my AC, but not much. The best Plate armor in the game is the red dragon hide (AC –1) and I think the Gorgon Plate is a bit better on the AC side (-2 or –3). So I wore the shadow dragon armor instead (AC 1). No big deal, plus it looks cool. OK, so at LV 17 my backstab modifier was only x4 (not x5), but I had a better THACO than any thief can ever dream of. Most of my backstabs were still in the 40-50 HP range (and I even did a 100 HPer once on a critical hit) and once the backstab was delivered, he was still a first rate fighter. He and Minsc conspired to do about 90% if the kills. The key with rangers is not to blindly go into a fight, but make use of stealth and surprise. Do not forget that you have access to all fighter magic items and did I mention the little trick about casting detect traps and going into stealth mode?

Plus the Ranger has a great stronghold quest. I prefer a role-playing approach myself, but I seem to be making a power gamer argument here.

I think you've got a convert to Ranger-dom.

I've been playing with thieves (Assassin) and keep getting annoyed about some of their deficiencies - like rubbish with weapons for a start. A stalker is starting to sound like a good idea. Dual-weilding Celestial fury and pixie-prick and wearing Shadow Dragon armour. Cool.

BTW - I thought Rangers couldn't dual-class?

OKI, can´t help but to post my 2 C here..

I like to play rangers due to the fact of what they stand for mentally.. OK mostly roleplaying. The dual wield you get and the racial enemy makes him a good advesary to most monsters. As with all characters he is a teamplayer, none has the most perfect plan, they all are balanced to make an interesting group..

The ranger is not so good in CRPG´s as in PnP games, cuse of the lack of survival at travels, tracking and the forrest is his home, not cities and dungeons..

I can understand that you don´t like Rangers, no problemo, we are all entitled to out opinions.

Another Ranger bonus that appears to have been missed is (I'm fairly sure) that they get a bonus to weapon speed, either 1 or 1/2 an attack per round. This may only apply to dual wielded weapons, I'm not sure. I couldn't find my BG2 manual, but from my IWD manual -

Dual weapon usage
"Rangers get one bonus attack per round if they are using either a small or large sword. They get the bonus attack only if they have a one handed sword equipped but no shield".

Still, it's a good bonus to have and another point in the Rangers favour.

One love, peace.
