I have a question or three about how this system works...
If I have a fighter class character who begins with: large sword: ** bow: ** and I get to a level-up where a new proficiency star is avialable, why can I not add it to, say, bow? I am always forced to add it to a completely new weapon class. Why is that? Is there some system that prohibits the character from getting too many stars in a certain weapon too early? I've never quite understood how this works... Why would my character get a proficiency in blunt weapons, for example, when all she ever used was a sword and a bow? Does anyone know how this works? thanks,

Hmm, weird. Are you sure you are playing a fighter and not a paladin or ranger ? The last two can only get two proficiencies in any one weapon. Also a mutliclassed fighter can only get as much proficiencies in a weapon as his second class can get. For example a multiclass fighter/cleric would only be able to put one star in a weapon.

No, multiclass Fighters can get two stars in any weapon-group, regardless of their other class. A pure Fighter should be able to get more though. I second JR's question, are you sure your character is a single-class Fighter and not a multiclass Fighter, a Paladin or a Ranger?

I third it, and say that you have to have made a mistake and be either a ranger or paladin.

Fighters : Advanced Weapon Specialisation (5 stars)
Ranger&Paladin : Weapon Specialisation (2 stars) So you have made a mistake...

I see. My character is multi-class. I didn't know about the restriction. This leads to another question:
What are the class restrictions? I dont' see a table in the rule book for this. Katherine |

Class restrictions as per weapon use?
This could take some time : For single class characters: Fighters can use any weapon and have up to five stars Paladins can use any weapon and have up to two stars Clerics can use only blunt weapons and slings and only get one star Druids are restricted to scimitars, clubs, spears, slings, quarterstaff, dagger, dart and also only get one star Mages can use daggers, darts, quarterstaff and sling .. one star Thieves can use daggers, clubs, quarterstaff, long sword, short sword, darts, short bow and sling .. one star (I may have missed a few on this ...) For dual class or multi-class it gets more complicated. In general, and dual/multi class combo involving a cleric is restricted to the clerical weapons There are also armor restrictions for druids and mages.

quote: Thanks. I knew about the armour and weapon restriction, but never knew how the stars worked. I had a multi-class fighter and was thinking it was a bug that she never got more than 2 stars in her weapon profs. Now, I understand better. Thanks. Katherine |

You're welcome. Some of this changes with the new kits that are available in BG2, but at least for TotSC its right.
