Question Mark NWN1 and X800GTO Video Cards: A Question

When I built my 939 system 2 years ago I upgraded from my ever reliable ATI Radeon 9200 128 mb card to a very stable X800GTO 256 meg card.

It was at least 3 years since I played NWN1 and so I decided to install it on my new system. The game installed all the way to the opening cinematic screen and then crashed me back to my desktop. Long story short: NWN1 and the ATI 800 architecture do not get along. Even with patch updates from early last year the game was known by both then ATI and Bioware to conflict.

My issue was common.

I'd like to reinstall again but I can't find if this issue was resolved with later patches. Does anyone have a clue about this or can direct me otherwise?

Thanks.

Some effects don't work with the newer ATI cards...who knows why.

My ole' x800GTO ran fine, so long as I had Shiny Water disabled.

My HD 2600XT required that, plus character mapping, or something like that.

...but, my GeForce 8800GTS 512 runs it with everything turned on, no problem.

Go to your NWN Dir, and inside, you will find the nwn.ini file. Open this up in notepad, and you'll see a bunch of lines.

Edit these to the following settings, and let me know if all is ok.

SafeMovie=1
Disable Intro Movies=1

Well, much as I used to champion ATI(AMD) over nVidia...the nVidia cards just seem more compatible with NWN.

Tell us how things work out.

I fully understand. After an expensive (at that time) ASUS Ti4200 artifacted to death I was forced to get the cheapest card I could afford. There was an ATI Radeon 9200 128 meg card at my local Walmart. I popped it in and it has been as solid and steady ever since in my old P3 system.

I will say the new ATI 3850 and 3870 are down right sweet.
