Silly question here. When my ranger hit level six, she gained the ability to summon her animal companion. I looked over the stats and chose the wolf (purely a role-playing choice, as there were stronger animals...). Here's my question, though. WHen reading the stats, it says that the wolf has 44 hit points. WHen I actually summed it it had 11 (now up to 16).
Why?
Is 44 the maximum it will eventuall reach as I go up level, or what?

Not sure if this is the cause, but maybe that is the description for a lvl 6 druid companion as my druid's companion had around the same stats at lvl 1. so druid's lvl 1 companion = lvl 6 ranger companion?

also, when you lvl up you can reselect your companion and it will also be 1 lvl higher.

Do all animal companions level equally even if you haven't been using them. For instance I have been using the dire wolf with the intention of switching to the hawk when I get powerful enough that the hawk gets the disarm feat. Or do I need to be using the hawk with every level so it can get to level 5 for the disarm feat?

I'm confused.

I myself have been using a bear. Did you all notice the neat little trick with the talk to your compaion. If you feed him she heals herself.

Black panther is cool. It's a rogue, so it does sneak attacks.

I too noticed the hp discrepancy. It must be the druid versus ranger thing. When I looked at the companion choices at level up, the bear showed over 100 hps. When I actually summoned it, it had about 60.

Do you lose hps or xps when a companion dies? In the manual, it says mage types lose 1d6 hp when their familiar dies, but doesn't say anything about animal companions. On another board, someone mentioned losing 50 xp when their familiar died. Is there any penalty for having your animal die?
