All characters at level 1 get a fixed amount of HP determing their HD. A Fighter gets 10, not 1d10, plus the Con. bonuses. At level 2, that is when you roll for additional HP.

No.. At level 1, all characters get the max HP. If they had it so you rolled at 1st level, you could roll a 1, so... After reaching level 2, all characters roll their HD and add the Con. bonus, then they add that total to their original HP.

For a Dual classed character he gains the dice for his class per level in his first class, then when you become another class you gain the hit dice for that class. for example a dual classed character who gains the maximum hit points per level without con bonuses ( he's a whimp )who started as a 8th level fighter then becomes a cleric would have :

fighter 8 8d10 for 80 hp
cleric 1 1d8 for 8hp

for a total of 88 hp
A lousy cleric for the level he is at, but a lot of hps and with luck he should gain emough exp to start using his fighter abilities again.

This sort of thing is why I never tried running games with AD&D....eeek.

But I'm pretty sure that once you've dual'd, everything goes over to what you've just added, in terms of what happens when you level up. I've yet to actually PLAY a char and dual class it in BG, so I'm glad someone else asked this question.

for dualing, you DO NOT GET ANY hp while your level is below your previous class level.WHen you gain the level that returns your pervious abilities, you start rolling for HP as your current class, so dual-classes fighter level 8 with 80 hp, when he becomes first level cleric will only have those 80 hitpoints, until he becomes level 9 cleric, at which point he'll be able to roll 1d8+constitution(max of 2) bonus for his HP.

Is this for BG2? Because I avoid dual classing but I go by the AD&D 2nd ed rules, (that way I figure I'll be able to figure out why things happen the way the do.) Dual class characters do get to recieve thier hps for the 2nd class. They dont get use thier abilties from the first class and the difficulty of dual classing is the stat requirements for the 2nd class, dependant on the class.Another problem with dual classing if done at higher levels of couse is the fact you suck in abilty compared to the rest of the party. It's a shock when your use to playing a powerful fighter who cant whack a low level monster because your now a first level cleric.
