Hey everyone, how are the pre-holidays treating you?

To the topic at hand, my computer crashed a few weeks ago. Having unsuccessfully contacted campus tech support, I tried a go at it myself. I reformatted the C: drive, reinstalled Windows, and have pretty much everything back to the way it was. But there are a few things I'm having some trouble with. First there is the audio control buttons I have on the side of my labtop. Simply put, they don't work. They used to, and now they don't. Also, my computer used to have the standby/hibernate feature, and now it doesn't. I've no idea why.

If you need my computer specs, to know the software I've reinstalled, etc., just ask.

Oh, and while I'm at it, my page scrolling is all screwed up now too. It's kind of jerky now. Any ideas how I can fix that?

All those problems sound like driver difficulties to me, scrolling will almost always be jerky when using generic video drivers. So you need to find drivers for your video card, did you get a cd with the laptop??
That should have all the drivers you need.
Otherwise, you need to find the names of the devices having problems, and then download drivers for them
As for the hibernate feature, I think that is just an option in the "Power options" in control panel.

Hope that helps

If its a brand name laptop like Dell or IBM then vidt there websites and make sure you download all the driver and utilities packages that they have on the website. This should get everything back up and running.

If you post your brand name and model number i can track it down for you.

It's an HP Pavilion ze5730us. I just now tried installing all their drivers, but that didn't seem to fix the problems I'm having.

I think they're all settings problems. Jerkyness could be there because there is no smooth-scrolling enabled, the hybernate feature is gained by holding shift at the shutdown prompt(enable in Power settings). I've no idea about the sound controls..

I have smooth scrolling enabled, and there is no option to enable the hibernate feature in power options.

Where can I find what video card I have?

Its an onboad video card so the only place to check it is the HP site.

It's worth trying the Windows Update site as they will usually offer you updated hardware drivers and save you the bother of knowing your hardware.

Video card driver, check.
HP had the option of installing it directly from their site (which I was trying to do), but kept failing from a faulty integrity check. So I downloaded it, then installed it from there.

Thanks for the help everyone.

I just noticed my hibernate feature was back. One of the drivers I installed must have fixed it. Now all I need is to fix the audio controls on the side.

Check the HP site again. I believe that most laptops come with preloaded drivers and such for their proprietary hardware -- the side buttons and so on. A clean install won't put those back (unless you're using their original install disks, which probably have those things).

Glad to hear it's most of the way back. May I suggest a good system backup once you get it where you want it? My last one is currently saving me...
