New version of VLC Player out! v09.9 (Best freeware video player out there)
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
It's blows away most commercial video players too! It's open source, and plays almost anything you can throw at it.. (Like those damn MKV file formats) It's totally clean--no spyware etc.. so it's cool to install. Try it out, it's becoming VERY popular now--I've been using it for a little over a year, and it's never let me down. Totally murders Microsoft's media player.. lol.

Re: New version of VLC Player out! v09.9 (Best freeware video player out there)
Would this program also be able to transfer the songs from my CD's to my MP4 player?
I tried to put some Steely Dan on there last week, so I put the disc in and selected Media Player. I selected "burn and it did it's thing. Then I had no idea what to do next. Why is it so hard to do a simple "legal" thing? I tried Nero and could not figure it out that way either. iTunes is just plain garbage..

I never tried VLC For burning anything, but I *do* know another amazing app called Media Monkey--
http://www.mediamonkey.com/ It does burn I believe--It even can read your MP3s ID tags, and fill in the missing info--even add Album Art!!!! (Love that!) so the little CD Cover shows up on your ipod or Zen player. VERY cool. Media Monkey is also freeware! It's a total gem, check it out!

VLC can burn IIRC, but I too never use it for that. I just use it to play stuff since Windows Media Player to this day does not come with the codecs for many movie, music and media files.

I downloaded both programs mentioned. Thanks! I love these types of posts on IW that refer me to cool toys. In fact, that reminds me to tell a story of one in another thread...

Re: New version of VLC Player out! v09.9 (Best freeware video player out there)
Not sure why, but I have never liked VLC, it always seemed crappy to me, and the user interface was just cheap and nasty.
I tend to use Mplayer for all my open source needs... But I might give it a go if it has gotten better? |

Re: New version of VLC Player out! v09.9 (Best freeware video player out there)
Well, it does look a little basic I guess, but it has tons of options/preferences including (one I always use) volume normalizing for movies that seem too low and high simultaneously. And, as far as codecs go etc. I have seen nothing that can rival it. It plays .flv's and stuff where WMP cannot. Also it has no issues with DVD's or DVD files, where WMP sometimes becomes picky. As far as visual goes, you can skin VLC too.
